Gas in $/Liter
Not that anybody cares, but I think it's frustrating at this point that with all this attention given to current gas prices, we haven't realized that we have been paying very little for gasoline compared to Europe. It's difficult to see, but a few calculations make it fun to see how little we're actually paying.
Take the price of gas and divide by 3.785. Premium in Albuquerque is now $1.088/Liter. When I was in Germany last, people paid 1.49 Euros/Liter ($2.315/l). It would cost well over $100 to fill our Civics up in Germany. I'm probably the only American who feels trapped in this world of prices measured in 3.785l (a gallon feels so arbitrary and lacks precision). I'm a bit of a brain, too, and found that at current prices (above $1/l), every 100m (0.1 km) costs me one cent. That translates into 10 cents for every kilometer, and therefore about $50 for a full tank, though I avoid that by filling up more often. Yay for dorks. Think Different.

Forget Europe, here in Canada it's $1.35/L for Regular and $1.50/L for Premium. Even with the correct conversion to US dollars, it's still way more. I don't see what you guys are complaining about ha. It costs me $100 to fill up my vehicle... I can't wait for my Si

You know, right now would be a great time to move to the metric system. If gas were measured in liters it will take awhile for some people to figure out how much gas really costs, and maybe they would stop bitching about gas prices for awhile.
Plus I work with measurements everyday and I hate feet and inches. Metric is a way better system. |

yeah go metric, then when they raise the prices 10 cents it will be per litre not per gallon (that 10 cent increase would be about 40 cents per gallon).
Here in Canada, what with the daily fluctuations, a 5 to 10 cent per litre increase overnight is normal. I suspect in the U.S. if gas shot up 20 to 40 cents per gallon overnight, citizens would be marching on Washington. But of course if you took all the damn taxes off our pump price then that $1.34 per lire we are paying now would only be about 85-90 cents per litre. |

You know, I had thought about getting one (solid black on the side of my shoulder)! Probably won't. I'd cry like a baby...
Anyway, I think it is true that people will understand how much the markup on Gas really is. Example: $130 per barrel on the market. Price at the pump is $4.10/Gallon. What's the markup? With liters: Market price is $0.9/L. We pay $1.10/L. What's the markup? DUH. |
