Reflash Files for the ECM

We all know that the dealer can reflash the ECM on our cars by loading a file that overwrites the previous data stored. A friend of mine mentioned that Honda and Acura save these reflash files with a .rwd extension that is a compressed file. Does anyone know what kind of software is used to read and write files with a .rwd extension? I did a search on Google, Yahoo, etc. and could not find much at all.

Just a guess (I'm an Avionics guy) EEPROM software..... You actually expose (re-flash) the Circuit Card Assembly (CCA) EEPROMs to high intensity light to clear out the memory and reload what data specs you want to the CCA using a simple PC... It's that easy.. The dealer probably uses something along those lines but I'm only guessing...

RWD files are used in a couple video games. Ive never used it before, but ive heard you can open it with Watto Studios Game Extractor.

Good Luck.

That was actually the first thing i came across. RWD actually stands for Raw Wind Data. I guess they are the creators.

True...The file is written to a EEPROM chip. I'm more curious about the software used to create/extract the .rwd file itself though.

Ach... slow down everyone. The .rwd file has nothing to do with any gaming file format. The file does not actually have anything to do with EEPROM flashing either. Those files are specifically designed to be used in conjunction with a "HIM" (Honda Interface Module). They are nothing like the standard .bin files that are used for OBD0/OBDI reflashes. The files contain a series of instructions for the HIM to transmit the required changes through your cars OBD2 port to your ECU. The file isn't actually compressed, its encrypted. According to the OBD2 standard, manufacturers are allowed to encrypt the programming functions of the OBD2 port.

This subject can fill up whole novels. Form more information check your the PGMFI forums. http://forums.pgmfi.org

If you can get your hands on these files, please find a way to get them to the PGMFI community. There are a lot of brilliant people there who are working their buts off to crack OBD2 programming.

Thanks for the response. It figures that it would not be that easy.

Unfortunately it never is blue. Gone are the days when we could solder a simple ROM into our ECU boards and add a single jump wire to completely reprogram our cars.
