25 psi Turbo w/ 13:1 Compression Ratio!

Got your attention, huh!

The new Car and Driver magazine has an article on a technology called Ethanol Boosting Systems, or EBS. It uses E85 Ethanol that gets squirted directly into the chamber via direct-fuel-injection, thus fooling the engine into behaving as if it's burning 150-octane fuel. As a result, it can tolerate the typically destructive combination of high boost plus high compression ratio. The article mentioned that an engine to support such a mixture would be running a 12:1, or possibly even 13:1 compression ratio, with either a turbocharger or a supercharger at 22 psi to 25 psi of boost pressure across a broad rpm range, and an intercooler.

The point is ultimately to save fuel, because massive power will be able to be made from relatively small displacement engines. But how amazing would something like this be for the K20Z3?? Obviously you would have to completely build the engine with forged internals, etc., but I'm guessing 350 hp to 450 hp could easily be made, if not more. And possibly better mileage as well!

Too bad there are only 1,000 E85 pumps currently in the whole country.

E85 requires twice as much fuel to maintain the same power levels as gasoline. supplimented with gasoline would help some but pure ethanol isnt practical for a daily driven vehicle that is built for performance as opposed to fuel economy.

Lucas English, an evolution tuner in the Portland, Oregon area recently got one of his customers daily driven cars into 9 second quarter mile times running e85 and meth.

e85 has lots of advantages, it's downfall is that is requires more quantities to achieve the results.

Indeed, it just doesn't have the same chemical energy.

The EBS engine predominantly uses gasoline, but has an auxiliary E85 tank, and only uses a fraction of the Ethanol. They said you would only need to fill up the Ethanol tank every third gas fill up...

BUT, because of the price of e85, can I run it in the si?

I would imagine those horsepower numbers could be achieved. Blacktrax has a silver RSX-S that has forged internals, that is putting down 600+.

Unfortunately, without an ecu swap, our cars arn't currently candidates for such a thing, until someone comes up with a viable engine management option.

super high compression with boost and lower chemical energy fuel is nothing new... it is call Diesel.

it burns complete, and clean... in theory...

I don't like the idea of ethanol. It has other polutants, you don't get as good of gas mileage, and it takes more energy to make than it produces.

Just so you know, that stuff's supposed to mess up your ride if it's not flexfuel capable. I know alot of guys on s2ki used it and then had problems.
