my 5000 mile review on the AJP kit

so its been about 5000 miles sice i got my kit on so i thought i would give a little review for those who thought the kit wouldnt last or whatever.

euipment:
the kit is great. i havent had a problem out of any of the equipment with this kit. it is made well.

only thing is i have an exhaust leak, which could be the manifold. just like the problem blueroadster had, but im not certain. and its a pretty small leak

drivability:
awesome. i dont drive my car everyday, but if you drive this car normally, you or anyone else wouldnt know it was turbocharged because it drives stock.

gas mileage:
ok. if you drive the car normal and do not boost it, you will still see ~25-28 mpg. which is great.

reliability:
great, i havent had one breakdown with this car. and i drove it to florida which is about 13.5 hours for me and the car held up non-stop.

fast factor:
insane. i know my times werent awesome.
1/8 mile et- 8.4
1/8 mile speed- 87 mph
but my suspension setup isnt the greatest.

reflash:
ehh... well i know its all we got right now. and it does its job, but im not having the stalling issues. i change my plugs more often than they are needed to be safe, because they are only $10 but, my car will only stall when say i push in the clutch at like 6000 rpms.

i honestly dont think my kit is performing to its fullest because for some reason i think i have a boost leak, because when im in full boost my a/f gauge jumps around along with my boost gauge. and im running ~10.5 a/f under full boost which is too rich, and i try to turn the fuel pressure down, but still the same because i tried to put it at 43 psi.

anything else you guys are wondering about or want me to add. just tell me

my overall experience-

p.s i installed everything on my car by myself so i know quite a bit about this kit.

well I don't have the kit nor do I plan in the furture to get it but I would say that it seems like fairly minor problems compared to some of the horrror stories I heard about this kit (althought these might because of installer doing it wrong). It sounds like you'll have a great kit once you find the leak and repair it.

You said along time ago once you get your clutch you would do another pull video like your very first vid (or the vid like complex's comptech s/c vid) when we going to get another one of those? really wanna see how that thing pulls with a clutch that can hold it..

great review!! really nice to know that you prettymuch had no issues with your car..Its more of a relief for me to read these kind of things, especialy about the AJP kit on the fg2... as far as the manifold leak I hope they can fix the problem you are having,,and I hope that the lastest manifolds welded, are without any weak seams or connections..... ....
8 more days!

i am going to wait for Rev-Hard or Turbonetics to make a complete kit. id hate to drop that kinda money on something and get no customer service if i was having issues.

Thanks for posting a review.

Regarding the manifold, mine was warped on the flange. This happened when the runners were welded to the flange. Basically, the flange got too hot and warped. Tightening the manifold bolts will not straighten it out. You would have to bring the part to a machine shop or some place with a large belt sander so that they can completely smooth the flange.

Regarding the fuel pressure, I am surprized that you are running at 43psi. In the stock configuration, the fuel pressure acceptance range (as per the shop manual) is 48-55psi. I set mine up at 52psi and it was running lean under boost. When I changed it to 55psi, it was good to go. I realize that our setups are different, but thought I would mention my observations.

How often are you changing out the plugs (i.e., average miles between changes and average number of times during this period when boosting)? The plugs fouling out in a short period of time is the one thing that a lot of people with the kit are consistently experiencing (regardless of who did the installation).

i think the variance in how long the plugs last are based on the heat range and driving style. Ron, hasnt changed plugs but once this year so far and that was before we started dyno sessions about 3 weeks ago.
