quiet exhaust mod?? must see

souhgt of a cut-out ... but imo better(cuz it's not electronic) and probably (90% sure) my next mod. $285.00

it's safe to say my stock exhaust or a comptech exhaust will be on my car in the very near future

for the lazy guys ...
basically ... it opens a valve and bypasses ur restrictive exhaust. it's boost dependent so u can operate it off a boost controller or keep it off until u want it operational... keep ur stock, quiet exhaust and still have performance when u want it

http://www.atpturbo.com/root/releases/release091004.htm

The Virtual Exhaust System explained:
The VES (Virtual Exhaust System) is designed for “real world” drivers who demand “race track” level power from their turbo car.
Turbo car owners know that a full 3” Cat-back (from the catalyst back to tail pipe) exhaust system, allows the turbo engine to make the most amount of power, but is often too noisy and uncomfortable for every day driving.

3.0" Racepipe
For some customers, installing a full 3” system means enjoyment from the newfound power and additional wheel spinning torque by unleashing the turbo exhaust flow. This is all good until exactly 1 week later when the additional power is overshadowed by downsides of the larger exhaust.

Some of the common complaints are:

* Too loud at start up and at idle.
* Too loud at part throttle driving.
* Too much in-cabin noise during cruising speeds – can’t hear the radio.
* Draws too much attention from law enforcement.
* Too many citations for modified exhaust -> leading to citations for modified engine components.
* Car wakes up the neighbors when you come home at night.
* Exhaust system needs constant adjustments because it doesn’t clear the rear axle and rubs other parts of the car.

While we don’t currently produce large cat-back exhaust systems (with good reason), we have observed and experienced all the above complaints from our customers (and ourselves).

Enter the VES (Virtual Exhaust System)…….A system that works “on demand” at the onset of boost on turbo and supercharged vehicles to free up all the backpressure (just as a large exhaust system would) in the exhaust stream so the engine can make maximum power. The VES system works as an active dump tube that completely bypasses the restrictive exhaust system when boost is present. As soon as the turbo spools, the valve begins to open. By the time the turbo makes full boost, the valve is fully open.

Highlights of the way VES works:

* Completely quiet and stock-like sounding during startup, idle, and cruising.
* 0 delay in valve response to boost, yet very smooth transition into boost mode.
* Automatic open/close under boost using existing boost source on turbo engine and does not rely on wing nuts or electrical motors.
* Integrate a boost controller to control when the valve opens or completely turn it off.
* Addresses virtually all complaints associated with large 3” cat-back exhaust systems.

Highlights of how our VES components are built:

* Solid billet steel construction holds up to high (turbo) temps and won’t fatigue and fail in continuous heat.
* Precision CNC machined to tighter tolerances for a gasket-less seal.
* Built using existing, reliable wastegating technology.
* Standard valve built to accept most common actuator bolt patterns for wide range of spring pressures.

Universal and applications specific kits will be made available, but as usual, all components will be available “a-la-carte” for our DIY and fabricator customers.

Dyno proven performance:

Test car: 2002 Volkswagen GTI 1.8T
Turbo Kit: ATP GT28RS Kit
Intercooler: Stock
Boost Level: 15PSI
Exhaust System: Stock muffler and exhaust piping
Exhaust Modifications: ATP Virtual Exhaust, 3.0" Downpipe

I'd suggest keeping your current exhaust...If it is too loud, then go with something more restrictive (i.e. quieter).

IMHO, the AJP exhaust by itself is not obnoxiously loud. What is obnoxiously loud is when the wastegate opens and bleeds excess exhaust gasses through the dump tube to atmosphere. I'd rather see a Y-pipe that can connect to the end of the wastegate dump tube itself that offers the user the ability to switch between having the excess exhaust gasses either vent to atmosphere (when at the track) or sent back to the exhaust plumbing and using a flex fitting (to keep it quiet during everyday boosting).

Later this month, I will be doing something similar to the above to quiet down the exhaust gasses coming out of the wastegate dump tube.

i find my exhaust to be boomy when driving under 4200 rpm ... that is where the waste gate won't open ... especially when moving from a stop.

i don't like it when i just start the car up and it's even louder ...

i'm just thinking about it now but i'm leaning more towards this mod and going back to stock or comptech.

the way i see it ... i'd put a 3" random tech cat in there to cut out some of those fumes i get when my windows are down, put this in after the cat, have a stockish exhaust to keep it clean, sleeperish and quiet ...

i don't do much street racing so i don't even care to have it operational during everyday use ... ... beside i can run someone with it closed, depending on the outcome i'd open it up

i think cheesefrog had something like this on his civic. the one in the video that runs the viper in nightvision. he had a dx or something EK hatch with the stock exhaust but something very similar to this (might have been electronically controlled instead of boost controlled)

If you put in a cat, it will quiet the exhaust down a lot and make the car more environmentally friendly. I've already asked AJP to make me a custom downpipe to integrate a Random Technology 7000 series cat with flanges on both sides (so that it can easily be swapped out with a test pipe when running at the track). The part is scheduled to ship out to me at the end of this week.

I never said anything about street racing and I do not condone that type of behavior. As I am sure that you know, you do not have to be racing in order to hear the wastegate bleed off excess exhaust pressure to the atmosphere...You can even hear it when reving the RPMs up at a standstill.

BTW, here is a link on how I plan to modify the dump tube.

I've seen this in action on an STi - it's cool but I doubt is effectiveness. It would seem you need a standalone ECU for a second fuel map when the exhuast dump valve is open.

unless you prioritize the flow into the cutout its basically a large exhaust leak. the hot exhaust pipe will thermally contuinue to draw the exhaust past the cutout. not to mention without prioritizin g flow and stepping down to a limiting exhaust will not net the same gains as the 3" exhaust you currently have now. i dont understand how you cant take your exhaust note now what are you expecting with a cutout you basically have a 3" dumptube under your care reverb'n on the asphalt

That thing is going to be ungodly loud when it is open, but you might be able to shoot flames out of the bottom of your car! and everyone needs that.

The wastegate already does on these cars. My exhaust craps fireballs all the time.
