Opinions on whether to buy CAI or not, please.

My birthday is coming up (24, bummer) and I know I'm getting money. I own a LX Sedan. I have been kicking the idea around of getting an Injen CAI with the money. http://www.injen.com/SP1569_mkt.html

I have my doubts however. First off, I don't race, nor will I ever. I don't speed alot. For the most part, I drive fairly easy on my cars because I like them to last. Although, I'm thinking this would be a good investment in the long run. I've heard that CAI's can actually help with gas mileage, but it's not like I need the help, I'm getting at least 33 mpg on average. I kind of just thought it would be cool to give my car a little extra umph! Like I said, I'm kicking it around, and I'm not sure how practical it is. I would like some input on why I should/n't get a CAI, how much difference it has personally made, etc. I appreciate your advice.

Someone here will mention something about "if it rains in your area a lot, don't get it cuz it'll cause hydrolock and your engine will seize so you should get a SRI instead..."

Hogwash and belly sprinkles....

In order for your engine to hyrolock, you need to be driving through some pretty deep puddles long enough for the filter to trap water. Simply rain will not do this. If your area gets flash flooding frequently, I'd steer clear of the CAI. If it not, there's really no reason for you not to buy it. You'll be happy with it. :)

I live in Northern Alabama. It rains alot, but nothing major where roads are flooded unless it's out in the country roads. I have plenty of friends with previous model Civics who have had no problems.

I have one and it's the best mod for your money - the sound the engine makes is phenomenal when you push it just a little.

get a bypass if you go cold air. my friend locked his up and bent rods. it was a 7th gen, on the good side he ended up doing a k swap because of it.

Nice to see another alabamian in the house!

I would probably use the extra money maybe buying something for the car as far as looks to it. Maybe installing some different bulbs? fogs? or maybe even getting it tinted if you haven't already. :) Theres alot of little things you can do to your car to make it look good (not like it doesn't already)

ok here is the break down dude. from what i have researched the best isnt even a CAI. the K&N typhoon SHORT ram produced 10.2 hp as oppose to 8 from an aem cai when i called aem. and that was 10.2 at 6900 rpms which is a good range since when u shift u end up around 6000... but HONESTLY i almost say a K&N drop in is your friend. id rather spend $50 on a drop in the stock for 4-5 hp then $250+ for 8-10... thats just my theory. Save some money and get some race headers. The rsx-s RH made 15-18whp alone on one and comptech is testing their new Si ones as we speak. hoping for 15+. that with a filter would be a good combo but hey man its up to u. I feel the CAI is kind of good because the piping is in a placve where it stays somewhat cooler. the SRI gets pretty hot heating the air up. just depends. Its just hard to say man.

+1 for the dop in filter, 50 bux and all you do is pop it in, your spending to much money and time on the car if you just use it as a daily driver and dont race or speed!

I bought a K&N air filter and I am happy with it. I too have been contemplating a CAI, but the gains are minimal. The dynos posted by companies cannot be trusted.
