DIY-- Painted stock rims with red lip, and fix your curb rash

ok so this is what i started with

then i hit a curb and thought i ruined my rims(you can see the rash on the left side)

but then i followed this great DIY on another site
BMWTips wheel-scuff repair

so i did that and then i used some steel wool to scuff up the stockers

i then washed them REALLY good
and primed them

i then used red caliper paint

got this

this is where i messed up, i did the rims a little over a month ago, and it was too cold for the aerosol paint to stick, so i had to re-do them......what i did was bake them for about 3 minutes to get the surface warm then i ran outside and painted them.... them baked them again.. i think the temperature for paint is like at least 52 degrees

a pic of where i taped at

then you put them in this 10 minutes on 300 degrees

then i taped the lip off

then put three coats of black on them

then i took the tape off...used about 3 coats of clearcoat and got this

close up

i made this because ive had about 6 people ask me about how to do it so i hope this helps!

also here is another great DIY on painting rims
Gram Lights 57s TA !!! DIY Painted Rims - 8th Generation Honda Civic Forum

you cant even tell i curbed my rims at all...and the red lip is hard to tape on stock wheels because there is no defined lip...but you cant tell...even my friends thought i bought these rims...but if you get really close to them like less than a foot, you can tell they arent perfect.....

i mean i guess you dont HAVE to take the tires off, but baking a tire in the oven? and finding an oven that big? i dont know....

i have a local shop that is pretty big on aftermarket rims and they have a machine thats gauranteed not to scratch your rims....its $16 a tire...but its worth it

how did you get your paint/tape line perfect on the lip? I would think that the tape would give you trouble creasing while going around the wheel

I have an ep3 and was wanting to do the same thing to my stock wheels. Its bone stock but here is a photo chop of my plans.

Been wanting to get some ideas how I can keep the body color lip looking as good as I can.

Got any tips?
