I tried it , didnt notice anything really. Went back to stock and swore it got faster....lol.

Needless to say will be trying out a SRI and playing around with a few things. But yeah , the only benefit might be the lifetime use of the filter but at the same time , Ive seen tests where the k&n doesnt filter as good. Also just look at the density of the Honda filter both element wise and depth wise.

Longevity of oil and engine would probably be best maintained with the filter Honda designed for the purpose of power and filtration.

Otherwise go cai or sri for some power gains and live with the filtration. Reason Im done with CAI's is the poor ability to see if the filter is dirty as well as hard to reach to perform maintenance on.

try using the k&n inbox without the hose on the airbox bottom - the one that goes into the resonator. it'll be pretty much a short ram - or you can leave that tube, and remove the resonator for a cold air from the bumper.

Have you tired that? If so, how is it? I have Poorman's Mugen Air Box now. When it's heavy rain, I may wanna convert it into Short Ram.

First Post!!

Thanks so much TigerDave for taking the time to make this DIY I've spent some time researching what are my options for my SI's intake and learning what's the stock setup.

Reading / looking at the pictures in this thread made me realize the stock intake of the SI is actually a CAI, but of course way more restricting than the after market ones.

The one thing I'm still unsure is: What exactly in this picture IS the resonator, and where is the hole where the air is supposed to come in

Thanks for any replies.

when u replace the air filter, other than the 6 clips, do you have to unclip the sensor as well or just leave it connected?

You don't have to, but it is generally easier to take the top off the box if you do.

He meant that you don't have to take the MAF sensor off the top of the filterbox to change your filter.
It was already a given that the clips that hold the top of the filterbox had to be undone.

im so glad honda decided to use the metal clips as opposed to the previous gen civics using the screws. on my 02 civic, i accidentally over-tightened it and ended up breaking the screwing part of the plastic.

The resonator is the box at the bottom of the down tube that connects to the air box. The air actually comes in from the second tube that moves upward from the resonator and connects to the fender well.

on my taurus i unbolted the intake resonator, and got better throttle responce and noticable (better) engine sound.... its a taurus but it sounded pretty good. haha

can we just unbolt/cut off that resonator box completely? im sure that'd help a whole lot...

Honda's R&D cleverly designed that stock intake to provide nice cool air flow with a killer sound after the VTEC ignites without violating emission standards, it seems to be a bit chaotic but I have to agree that for a stock intake it does it's intended job.

As for the after market air cleaners, with a stock power plant the OEM air cleaners will actually function the best, they apply the right amount of air flow and particle protection for what's intended.

What are you looking to accomplish by doing so?

The intake system is designed to work as one unit and disturbing any part of it might cause warning lights to appear. If you're looking to eliminate the resonator box just do it right and ditch the entire OEM intake for a after market CIA.

Nope, taking out the intake resonator will not cause a CEL error. It's been done by many, many people on this forum and elsewhere. The thing here is delving into the purpose of each part of the intake system. The Filter has an obvious purpose: to filter. It is essential. The intake resonator has a purpose, to: to make the most 'desireable' engine sound to mass consumers by restricting the air in a certain way. For those of us who don't mind a loud intake sound, and like a little better HP and MPG, it's a win-win situation.
