I always get it mixed up. Dead battery happens so rarely that once I do jump start successfully, I forget about it and never think of it again. Then, when it happens again years later, I think "Was it positive first or negative?" Thanks for posting!

some people say that its not a really big deal if you connect ethier one first but..this is the safe way to do it.....

if you dont follow this step, you have a chance on blowing your fuses up or ended up a blown battery...

Or... buy a jump pack and never have to worry about damaging either vehicle... :) I had a bad habit of leaving my Integra's lights on when I first started using it for a daily (Subarus shut their lights off with the ignitiono), so after jumping the car twice, I bought a jump start pack from Sam's for like $50... :) great thing to own for sure! Charge it up and throw it in the back of the car...

Good little write up for one of the things that gets done incorrectly so often!

excuse me? I dont understand this " negative and positive" thing..
I just plug NEG , NEG, POS POS, and after jumping, just take the cables out, and thats it!
Does it have to be in " order" ?

it doesn't work that way..... and yes it does have to be in order..

sometimes they work just to plug in each side but there is a 70% chances that your goin to mess up some of your fuses and battery.

Bringing up a dead thread here, but there is an explanation to the theory of negative last, and connected to the engine somwhere.

The last connection made is the one that sparks. You want the spark as far away as possible from the battery because as some people don't know the gasses released inside a battery during normal use are explosive (hydrogen). So connecting the negative last and to a ground that's farther away from the battery greatly reduces the chance of the battery exploding in your face and blinding you, including using a charger. If charging your battery always plug the charger in last!

Jumping a car is a simple procedure but battery exploson does happen often enough, lose your eyes and your losing out on the best part of life, be safe!!

alternatively if you have standard in case you dont know you can start your car if your battery is dead and still has barely enough energy to ignite the spark plugs with momentum.

all you do is put the car in 2nd gear, press the cluth down, turn the key to the ON position, give your car about a 5 MPH push then you can either rapidly release your cluth ( bad on transmission) or you can slowly release the clutch. the car should start, if no cigar then your out of luck because your battery doesn't even have enough energy to get the spark plugs ignited. time to get a new battery, and a ride.

if your short on space you can use 1st gear but thats bad for the transmission.

no. just put the key in the ON position and release the clutch when you are rolling.

Here's an example to show you sort of how it works without killing your batter to try and do it. When you are driving on the highway and everything is clear around you and you are on a straight away (had to put in the disclaimer so the hippies would leave me alone)....Ok so you are going about 65mph. Push in the clutch. Leave it in what ever gear you are in...hopefully 5th or 6th. Turn the key to the OFF position. The car should just be rolling along at 65mph now. Turn the key back to the ON position. DO NOT TRY TO CRANK THE MOTOR. Just turn it to the ON position. Now ease off the clutch. Car is back on now right?

Same way a push start works...just much faster, obviously.

*If you wreck or damage something because you messed up the simple instructions...I'm not a fault. You are, for being a dolt.*
