DIY: radar detector hard wire

(wire colors that i list are for the 06 Si, coupe. Other cars wire colors may vary. "Kkim", says that the 07 sedans wire is purple)

Choose a place for your radar detector.... i chose up high so it would be difficult for thieves to see and it would not interfere with my windshield deflector. (yes i know that i lose rear, laser coverage but i like the position i chose and i dont really care about rear coverage for laser)

for a clean install, roll all your wires up so they will be the correct length.

Pop off plastic covers on the dome lights and unscrew the two nuts on the inside. Pull out the dome light and shove all your wires up there.

Tap in to the dark green wire 4 pins from the edge of this harness. This is the positive wire

Put the dome light back and make sure to run the ground wire through for the ground on the screw.

Here it is... Its all working....

Nice write up, but radar detectors can be counter detected and confiscated, and cost u a ticked here in Toronto. That is unless you keep up to date with them and always have the newest one.

Will tapping in there affect anything if we also put in an auto dimming mirror down the road? I don't want to over power the line and blow a fuse.

Also, what line is that? Is it 12V constant or is it only active when accessory/car is on?

12V when car is on. also it stays powered after you turn the ar off untill you open a door.

i highly doubt it will blow a fuse but I cant take responsability if it does so dont take my word for it... you might want to connect it to an amp meter to know for sure.

Thanks for the info. This will make hooking up my V1 far easier than I expected.

Good writeup

Is there a special way to pop the light covers off without breaking them?

I noticed there are 2 green wires coming to the harness. I bet 1 of them is for the sunroof power.

Thanks.

I POPed them off with a flat head screwdriver... doing it carfully does not brake them.

All newer detectors have things to prevent counterdetection. This is the one I have:

http://www.escortradar.com/x50.htm

I drive 90 almost everywhere I go. The 8500 X50 is so smart I can "see" cops for miles ahead, not even close to getting a ticket yet. This thing is the best $300 I ever spent by far!!

Around where I live cops have everything from undercover trucks, jeeps, camero's, and transportation authority now have chargers. So you never know what kinda of undercover your going to fly bye. I am good at picking out undercover cars (used to work for the police dept.) but if your doing 90 sometime you will not notice and fly bye them. Then you screwed. Because they dont have to have you on radar, they will just write you for wreckless. As far as laser goes. If the cop has a good spot and is pretty experienced with laser by the time your detector goes off you already caught. Smart cops will put their radar on hold (so it doesn't emit radar signal) and right when they see someone traveling balls to the wall they will take it off, bang your done because your detector goes off but they got your speed by the time you slow down. Now if a cop is doing stationary radar and hitting ever car that comes by them, then they work good because they can pick up the signal before you even get close. If the cops is smart and has been doing the job a while they can catch you. I got rid of my radar detector. I didn't have one for three years and was fine. Two months after getting one I got my first ticket, one month later ticket number two. Never bought another. But good DIY write up.
