DIY: radar detector hard wire - Page 4

Just in case you don't feel like spending $10. for a hard wire cable, and you don't want to destroy the original cigarette lighter cord, any phone cord will work. The jack on each end is EXACTLY the right style, and the 2 middle conductors carry the 12V. I used the black phone modem cable that came with my laptop (use that a lot) and cut about a 12" section for this use. The Red wire turns out to be 12V+ and the Green wire is GND. I checked a few other cords, and they're all using the same color code. Good luck!

good DIY. I ended up tapping into fuse 8 and running the control wire to the radar up the a-pillar and then right down above the mirror. I placed the mute button control right below the aux input.

Wait, you hard-wired it but let it in the middle of the wind sheild? The point of this 'mod' is to:

1. Get the radar detector out of the way so that cops can't see it and you don't have a monster cord that looks horrible hanging from the device.

2. The main reason I mounted mine up there is because it definately works better being up higher and isn't blocked by the rear window etc.

great diy! did everything as described but just stuff the positive end of the radar into the green connector where the green wite goes just to make contact. i just didnt wanna cut any part of my factory harness in case i feel like taking it out again. also the tape thing is genius!

Hmmm ... tape thing didn't work for me at all. What did I do wrong??

Great DIY... Thanks!! Had it wired up in about an hour.

And just to confirm, I have a 07 sedan and the wire was purple that I needed to tap into for switched power as stated by TexasK20Z in post #34. Guess the sedans have a different wire harness from the coupes.

turns out the tape thing only lasted overnight. got in my car today and the suction cups didnt hold up. anybody else got any ideas on how to do this without glue?

i need new suction cups for my uniden. i tried going to hobby lobby and buy some, but the cheap pieces of $#*! only lasted 2 days, now they wont even hold for 5 seconds. anyone know of anywhere to get these?

3M™ Dual Lock™ has a strong adhesive and holds my RD up near the rear view mirror well and is easy to take off.
I used the free extra set that came with my EZ Pass - I removed the suction cups from the detector mount and put the 1" Dual Lock Strip horizontally on the mount and window.
If you have EZ Pass, call the service center and say you need new mounting strips for the antenna. They'll send you 2 pair in the mail.
I can post pictures of the mount if people are interested.

Thanks!! That sounds like an excellent solution. So, you've had no issues with the strips sticking to the dotted portion of the windshield?

It didn't have a problem sticking at all. My EZPAss and RD are stuck to the dots. And I was able to slowly pry one of the fasteners off when I mis-aligned it the first time.

Also, the Dual-Lock is unobtrusive when I had to rip down the RD when the cop pulled me over
