i hate to bring a thread back from the dead, but it's better than starting a new thread for 1 question IMO. Anyways, I know practically nothing about electrical wiring/systems, and am trying to do this with my GPS. what exactly does it mean to "tap into the green wire"? Do I have to cut it, strip it and connect the GPS wire to it and solder it back together? Also it only said that the positive goes to the green. where does the negative go?
Sorry for the ignornace, but I've looked through a bunch of DIY's on this type of thing, and the OP expects you to already know how to do this stuff, so I can't find the info. |

2007 Civic EX Coupe:
I can definitely confirm that it's the Green Wire, 4th from the left, thicker of the two green wires. Stripped my RD's 12V adapter (Red+/White-) and bought a Self Stripping - Tap Connector. Tapped the Red wire to the Green, stripped the white wire by 1.5 inches then swirled it on the dome light screws. VIOLA! A 10 Minute Install - Thanks to the DIY. * Just a suggestion, make sure you purchase a tap connector. They're only $2 for a pack of 3. Don't ever strip the wires yourself from the harness as you may risk blowing your fuses. |

i have a 2010 si coupe... tried to wire to the map lights and it wont work this way for 2008 to 2010. it has 2 12v sources up there but both are constant ( meaning they are always on and if you tap them your device will always be on 2 ,, draining your batt when the car is not in use.. i tapped the fuse box. port #8 for my power. works great and turns off when car is turned off. there is a diy on his thread about half way through.. the fuse box is a much easier hookup than the map light ne ways. just wanted to put in my 2 cents to help others.. 2008-2010 WILL NOT WORK WHEN TAPPING MAP LIGHTS ONLY TAPPING FUSE PORT 8.. i wasted 2 hrs cutting up my map light harness figuring this out lol.. go to auto store and ask for an ADD A CIRCUT KIT for your fuse box.. only 5 dollars.. ps i used this method to hardwire a tom tom gps so it works as well

I read up to like pg 10 on this thread and if its after that sorry I'm impatient.
Has anyone found a way to keep the mute button on the cig lighter control functional? I would like to keep it if I can, but understand if its not possible. Also, can I get a break down of the phone wire trick of what wire does what ie. Black = ground Red = power but what about the other two??? Wow, reading that again I can't fully understand myself.... Ask questions.. I have the dumb right now. |

I just wired it up to my '11 FG2 and noticed theres a pink wire and purple wire so I tapped into the pink. It works, then shuts off when I open the door which is fine because I'm exiting the car, but when I lock the doors with the remote from the outside it turns back on again. I'm assuming I'll have to switch wires and tap into the purple one? Did/do you have this issue? I don't want to leave it on all the time or have to use the power button on the unit, I just want it to turn on when I'm using the car and off when I'm leaving the car.

Had a rainy day today, no work, so I decided to go ahead and try each wire... I have come to find that anyone with a 2009+ Si cannot get the same results as the guy who did this thread. There is not a constant current running to any of the wires in that area. The yellow wire that is up there is the moon roof wire, but unlike previous years that does not have constant current, so jumping from that wire means you will only get power to your radar detector when you are opening, closing or raising your moon roof.
So that leaves 2 options... tap into the pinkish wire and have your radar detector turn on and of every time you open your doors and stay on even when the car is off... Or do a direct wire into the fuse box. I am eventually going to switch to the fuse box option myself. |
