Weight/Power ratio:
Civic LX auto = 2718lbs / 140hp = 19.41
Honda Odyssey = 4385 lbs / 244hp = 17.97

With the above facts, we can conclude that the R18 is potentially slower than a Minivan in a straight line.

you guys with automatics should try driving by putting the gear on 1st then 2nd then D3 then D. and go to at least 6500 rpm on all the gears. you will feel the power and hear the vtec for sure. For your si owners out there if you think R18s are beyond slow let me tell you something. the claimed hp differnce between the si and r18 is 57 hp. if 57hp goes from "fast" to beyond slow.. what are you guys compared to G35s then

R18s are equipped with "backwards" vtec, meaning when it is one, you're in economy mode. What you feel is just the max hp in high RPM.

SI is slow too... noone can claim it is "fast" lol. It's "fast enough"

I think my R18 is fine. I had a tercel and then a Caviler. The Caviler had a 2.2 liter engine with only 115hp. My civic is faster than any of my previous cars. I'm not going to race or anything like that I want good fuel economy and that is what i get with my civic!! Its fun for me to drive and thats all that matters!

The math is not that simple. You have to calculate out the torque band and each gear.

Also the little R18 is quick off the line (redlight) since it has less weight and a nice fat flat torque band. Sure its not a true fast car. But on the way home from the gym on a back country road I got 43mpgs. And since ownership I have never gotten less than 32mpgs on each and every tank of fuel.

When gas prices hit 5.00/gallon I will be laughing at almost every car on the road other than the hybirds.

I, too agree that the R18 is plenty fast. Not super fast, but just quick enough. What's the use?
I'll admit that having a car like an Sti or Evo would be hella fun to drive, I've driven an Sti before and I love it.
I really want to try an Si though to see all this hype. You see a lot of smack about an Si being godly on these forums compared to an r18.

the SI's performance is superior in every way compared to a r18.

except Miles Per Gallon

And with the ligther platform the r18 with suspension kit can out handle the Si. FYI - the r18 and Si is still a CIVIC PLATFORM. Only difference is weight, springs, struts, and sway bars.

Cheaper insurance.

A few grand cheaper in intial price.

No 3rd gear issues.

also the lighter car can achieve a shorter stopping distance

Still think its superior in every way?

i said performance...... lol not economical. and the R18 cant out-handle the Si, with logic like that if i throw a suspension kit on a yugo it can out-handle everything.

When do you have the time to go fast nowadays?. The streets are so full of cops and other traffic that it's not a good idea to need a vett. I have an Si but DO think that the R18 is good enough.I don't drive fast all the time. It's good to have fast when you need it. But you'd be stupid to drive fast everywhere you go. Don't sweat it OP, the R18 is ok man. Soon you R18 owners will be laughing at us gas guzzler car owners. I don't think that the Si is a gas guzzler but compared to the R18, It is. Soon everyone will be trading in their Si's, trucks, SUV's etc for Hybrids or cars like the R18 cause of how bad gas will get. Mark my words. We're all going to suffer.

OH, yeah, I do know what fast is cause I've been in a Porsch 911 TURBO. I wanna ride in a SHELBY 500. That car is awsome!.

Nope the Logic is

heavy Civic verse lighter Civic - same suspension on both cars and the lighter civic will out handle the car with a few hundred pounds more weight. Simple physics.

Sorry but the Si is still a Civic just with stiffer suspension. That same suspension or better can be placed on the lighter r18 Civic.

The Si is just a fun sport-inspired car to slam around gears in.

I didn't say it wasn't. Just that it's put on a platform so high it's like it's a supercar. I have nothing against Si's like you Si owners have against R18's.

.

If I was looking for a car right now and I knew that the Si was out of my range. I would get an EX-L. Black leather with a Rallye Red Exterior and the HFP lip kit. HOTNESS!.

I've never been in an R18 before but you have to drive an Si to see what the hype is all about. Si=Sport Injected FOR A REASON. When you hit Vtec in an Si, you have to pay attention and clean your pants later LOL. it's a whole different animal I promise you. The Si is legendary.

Don't sweat the hybrids. You'll get to laugh at them when they get a few years and miles on them and it's time to change out all those batteries!! Wanna bet that resale values plummet on hybrids folks figure out how much all those batteries cost?
