question about insurance

my car was key , cuz i dont have collision coverage , only has comprehensive coverage
if i report to insurance, do i need to call the police and will they cover it?

Are you sure you don't have collision and do have comprehensive? Usually you can only get insurance like that if you are going to garage your car. Just to make sure we're speaking the same language, collision coverage pays for damage if you are driving and hit a tree, or someone hits you. Comprehensive covers you if a tree falls on your car or someone breaks into your car. If you have comprehensive, you should be covered for vandalism. DEFINITELY call and ask to file a police report. Drive to the station if necessary but ask to have an officer come out and take the report in person if at all possible. Part of closing the loop on vandals, thieves, etc. is for everyone to report any incident. Perhaps the cops picked up someone in the neighborhood around that same time and they had a knife or screwdriver that matched the damage on your car? You never know.
