Well looks like you didn’t get the best deal, but you may be able to get the financing, gap and extended warranty redone. If you belong to a credit union, they can almost cut the price of the gap insurance, and extended warranty in half. They maybe able to help you lower your interest rate as well. You do have to look in to it right away.
The finance guys make their money on commission as well, by selling you the extra stuff like warranty, life insurance, alarm and gap. You just have to see if it is right for you. Some might see it as “peace of mind” and others may see it as a “rip off” it all depends on your comfort level. A lot of us don’t take into consideration the extra stuff when negotiating for the price of the car. You think you are done negotiating, but you actually are not. You have to negotiate again when they bring you into the finance office. You have to remember they are all salesmen. I am sure a lot of us fell into that trap before. Some might say getting your own financing is better, but for me, Honda actually was able to beat the interest that my credit union was giving me. Sometimes Manufactures have promotions on certain cars. When I was in the market for a car, Honda had a promotion for the Civic SI. Its all about research, knowledge, and timing. At least now you know some of the pitfalls in buying a new car. |

Today after class I stormed in there and looked for the sales guy that ripped me a new one. All of a sudden the finance guy form behind greets me and I look at him in the eye and said in a loud angry voice "I don't want this car, you ripped me off!" He told me to calm down and to come into his office because he will explain things better. Inside he told me I can take off the gap, warranty, life insurance to bring down the car to 21k like he promised originally. Not good enough. You see, this guy didn't give me the official contract yesterday. That is illegal. I reminded him of this and he calmly says "Let me check if I forgot to give you your copy of the contract. Oh here it is, I'm sorry I left it in my desk, It was a human error we all make em". I didn't care, I told him I am not taking this car because every time I look at it it reminds me of how I got robbed and it leaves me with a sour taste in my mouth. I also told him 2 other local honda dealers will give me this exact car for 18k otd. He said impossible then He said I'll go talk with my boss, then comes back and says "okay, let me have the keys. The bank didn't approve your loan anyways, so good luck finding this car for $18,000 otd." I then asked for this return in writing so he came back with a Rescission agreement which was signed by a witness and by me and got a copy of that for myself and stormed out of there. I went to another honda dealer and they made the calculations for the same exact car: 2008 civic sedan ex automatic with no navi for $18,000+freight($650) a processing fee($299) and taxes. OTD came out to be $19,174. The salesman with my social was trying to figure out how to finance this for me. He told me that because of the fact I have a $15,000 debt with the dodge dakota which is also under my name, with no money down the payments are gonna be high, regardless of the fact I make on average about $4,000 a month. I told him I'm gonna grab a bite and I'll be back in an hour. So here I am. I think the price is really good, but Ultimately I will not pay more than $350 a month. So therefore I will just ask for the invoice of $19,174 and tell him I'm going to finance it myself with my credit union.

And I could of done a bit better at a different dealership. But anyone who lives near me knows Valley Honda is 100x better than The Honda Superstore of Joliet. I chose to pay $190 more at Valley Honda since the difference is huge in the end. The difference between the original poster and myself is I have the navigation system, fog lamps, remote start, Package A (Dad chose to do rust proofing and interior spray), Mud guards, and my extended warranty on the electronics which is at least $1,200 but I can't remember the exact price off hand. My price on the EX was $20,190 before any taxes and options. |
