full tank of gas

ok here goes...i filled up the other day and and it went down to 3/4 of a tank i approached 100 miles on the trip so technically if you do the math that would equall 400 miles on a take right? but it doesn't...can someone explain to me why this is? i'm just curious...

It doesn't really work out that way. What you think is 3/4 tank is probably less. Maybe 5/8th or so. It never worked out that way for me at least.

Yeah, the gas gauge isn't accurate to the percentage. It seems to drain faster for me around halfway.

Our gas gauges are not exactly linear in the civic. They are pretty accurate between 3/4 and 1/4 but the top quarter and bottom quarter can be 'hokey'.

My last 1/4 tank always goes realy fast. Thats the problem with electronic gauges. Mechanical ones are normaly a lot more accurate

it may not be accurate but its pretty consistent. I can always tell good mileage from poor anywhere under 3/4 tank. You'll get use to it.

Wait until its over, you will get surprises. The other day I filled up, drove about 40 miles and my tank still showed full, when I turn my car on the next day, it already erased two bars... crazy

I think our gas tanks are shaped like a funnel and they mark their halfway mark by using the length rather than the volume. That's why I think after half way down the bars dissapear exponentialy!

You also have to take into consideration the position of the car. Gasoline is a liquid, as you park in an incline the gauge can also misread more or less full. Being accurate to the mile is a bit far fetched to ask for, what about the quality , density, evaporation, winter/summer mixture of the gas? etc. etc. etc. Way too many variables to even try to begin to make such an accurate gauge.

That's about average. I hit 300 miles once because I was driving mostly highway.

I usually hit 270-ish, myself. Just recently hit a 305 mile tank, and I was real happy about that. Averaged 28.5 mpg.
