Parallel parking on a hill with a manual

So, i've started driving a stick back in July so i still dont know too much about little crazy techniques such as this, i live around Seattle so thank god i dont actually have to do this everyday, but once in a while I end up going there and i just want to know some tips maybe on how to do it better. Thanks Oh and this is parking on a hill when your front is towards the decline, and have to reverse into the parking spot in an incline. hAHA SORRY dont know how else to word it

Parallel parking sux when u drive a manual...my rule is parking garage if i cant find a spot that is big enough. i just don't trust the other cars...but i guess u really have to get the feel of the car and know the engagement points so u can quickly clutch in go into 1st then clutch out and go into reverse.

a trick that i use though is whether on an incline or decline i let the car roll into the spot instead of going into gear...for instance if i'm parking uphill i drive up next to the car in front then put the car in neutral and let it roll back slowly into the space then go into 1st move forward and so on until i'm parallel.

hope that helps!

I assume you have found "the sweet spot" where the clutch is at the engagement/disengagement point? If you give the car steady gas right at this point, you will move slowly, and if you move too fast, push in the clutch to slow/ stop. You know what I mean?

Ok, take this technique to the hill... line up your car B-pillar to B-pillar, turn your wheel, and modulate the clutch to the sweet spot. This may be tough since you will roll a bit, but after a while you will be fast enough on the gas to catch it. Don't stress, you aren't rolling that far forward.

Once you have hit that magic gas-to-clutch ratio, you'll start to inch back. You will have to give more gas here to counteract gravity, but just make sure you are giving it steady gas or else you will be all jerky.

If I were you, I'd go find a nice steep, empty hill and practice finding the sweet spot while facing downwards. That way you are prepared.

Make sure your front wheels are turned towards the curb and your e-brake is up too.

^^^ up up and away is how I remember. Also, make sure you put your car in 3rd gear (after you turn it off of course) and pull up the e-brake.

EDIT: with all the 3rd gear issues in a Civic Si maybe you should switch 3rd gear to 4th gear when parking

yea 3rd might pop out. I mean thats why your e-brake is there but having the trans lock it up is just a little bit of an added saftey which is why I mentioned 4th in my edit.

If you learn to drive the car correctly this thread wouldn't exist. Keep practicing!

1. Practice mastering parallel parking on a regular street (not a hill).

2. If you park with the front towards the incline ^, all you have to do is let the car roll back into the spot while having the clutch depressed and in first gear. Use gravity as your reverse and use 1st gear to stabilize. In addition, you can apply your brakes if the hill is too steep so you can slow down a bit.

3. Then try parking with the front towards the decline \/. This time use reverse to back up into the spot while using gravity to stabilize. It's a little tricky at first, but just like everything else - you will get used to it.

Hope this helps.

I thought when you park on a hill, your wheels should be facing towards the curb.

When they are facing away from the curb, it tells other drivers to be aware that your trying to pull out.

Hence the up up and away... think about it man. If your parking UP a hill and the curb is on the right side... and you turn your wheels to the right... what happens if your car starts to roll backwards? Your car will end up rolling backwards and the back end will start turning towards the curb and possibly going over the curb and who knows what from there.

NOW!!!

If your parking UP a hill and the curb is on the right side... and you turn your steering wheel TO THE LEFT SIDE... then the second your car starts to roll away then before it gets past 2-3mph the car will basically hit the curb and get cought on the curb... now hence the up up and away because your turning your wheels AWAY from the curb.

Huh? Can you reword that please?

---------------------

From what I understand is, if your parking up a hill (car facing upward) and your wheel should be towards the curb.

The only time your wheel is going left to a curb is if your parking on the left side of the street.

Did you read EVERYTHING? The first paragraph is the WRONG WAY of parking up a hill. The 2nd paragraph is the CORRECT way of parking... I didn't think it was that hard to understand

Mhmm...

I would have thought a decent size curb would stop a civic from rolling over it.

Perhaps my driver's ed teacher was wrong. I can clearly remember him mentioning the direction of the wheel tells other drivers if the car is park or trying to leave.
