Dumb Mazda dealer

So I've got to get this off my chest.. I can't believe how dumb some salesmen are.

Anyways, me and a buddy decided to go look at some cars since hes thinking of trading his Forrester in and getting a brand new performance car.. He's looking at the GTI, the Mazdaspeed3, Civic Si and the Subaru Impreza.

We decide to go to the Mazda dealer first to check out the MS3.

We get in, no salesmen around.. just a bunch of customers waiting to be helped. We stood for maybe 10 minutes before we decided to ask for some help.
A salesman gets called in and greets us. We ask for some information about the MS3 and if we can get a test drive in.

This is where he acts like a dick.

He says: "Nope" in the most arrogant and rude tone I've ever heard. He goes on to say that, the reason being is.. unless we're sure we're going to buy it, we can't test drive it. Wait a minute.. I thought we should test drive before we buy?

He then continues to say that this car is so rare, so fast and so exclusive to north america, that they can't just let "anybody" test drive it. I told him.. well we can't be sure if we're going to buy it unless we know how it drives. He replies with something along the lines of "well go home, do your research, read reviews and come back when your going to buy it. This is such an exclusive car that if we let anybody test drive it and put mileage on the car, then when some real car enthusiast comes in and wants to purchase it, he'll wonder why theres so much mileage racked up and thus they have to discount it which they don't wanna do"

Bullshit. That salesman deserved to be fired or something. It's true, that the MS3 is probably the highest performing vehicle in its class at the moment. For $32k CDN, 263hp yadda yadda yadda.. nothing really beats it. But service is crap. I think I'll write to the dealership concerning this.

/rant

We then continued to the Subaru dealership where we were gladly given the test drive and complimentary water.. which means a story for another day.

I was not allowed to test drive my Si when I bought it either. Of coarse I had the first one in MN but I can still see where they are coming from to a point, but yeah it sucks.

I guess I didn't need a test drive when I went in. I read the reviews...the car was dead sexy and that's all there was to it.

I would totally understand if he wasn't such a prick about it you know?

I didn't add this, but he also said that.. once I get in the thing, 2nd and 3rd gear will snap my neck back and I'll come in dizzy asking where to sign. He said that we were the only ones that came in doubtful that this thing would not knock our socks off. He insisted we go home, do our homework and after we found out how great a car it was, come back and buy it.

Of course, as a buyer.. you gotta be somewhat doubtful in your purchases to create an objective purchase.

I sold cars for years, and I have been in a situation where someone wanted to test drive a rare car that we did not want to put miles on. The salesman should have done a better job at qualifying to see if you were a serious customer. I've denied people test drives, but in a nice way, and still ended up selling them a car when they were ready to buy.

Sorry about the bad experience. Its salesmen like that that give car salesmen a bad rep.

yeah good point.. except its tough when you do all that stuff, they take you to their office and you gotta find a way to say no and leave. haha I guess it's different for everyone. But thats a good way to see whether the customer could afford it

Thanks, I'm confident there are better salesmen/saleswomen out there, it just happened that we got a lousy one. I agree, if he had done a better job at denying with a good reason, there would have been no reason to be angry.
My buddy really liked the MS3, but its cause of him that hes taking it out of his books. It's too bad really...

I wouldn't have minded it if the salesman explained in detail why he declined my request to test drive a car. In such a case and if it was a car I really was interested in, I would provide any information he needed for them to understand that I was a serious buyer. Just a tip to you though, you should have brought in a folder with some printouts about the MS3 and the other vehicles you were looking at; a telltale sign that you've done some research.

If the salesman was rude and arrogant, I would have requested to speak with the manager of the dealership. It's pretty ridiculous how some car salesman seem to have absolutely no people skills and have no idea how a customer should be treated. Salesman get paid to serve the customer, not the other way around.

This last April, I was considering the MS 3 and the civic si. I have owned several Hondas in the past and were happy with all of them. I was excited to try a test drive in the Mazda only to be turned away like I was some sort of dead beat. It frankly pissed me off. Keep in mind that I am 40 years old and can easily afford a vehicle twice the price of the Mazda, I just dont choose to blow an excessive amount of money on a depreciating asset. I immediately left the Mazda dealership and bought my SI the next day. It also did not help that they were adding 2 grand to the sticker of the Mazda. Its not like the car is a Porsche of something. In about 5 to 7 years it will be just another ragged out pos Mazda.

Yeah, I've done my fair share of research on the MS3, I just found that there was no point in arguing with a salesman that refused my money. It's true, they're good at talking, but not good at selling. It's really frustrating.

roadcarver, wow.. so it happened to you as well? thats interesting, I can understand them turning me down.. I'm 20, so they may assume that I'm still living off my parents. Thats ridiculous!

Haha that's funny.. I've heard of that being kinda common. Part of me agrees with it - If some punk came in looking for a joyride, I'd turn them down. However, people doing legitimate research on a car they're possibly interested in buying should be given a test drive.

The reason I say it's funny is because when I went to the dealership (a Mazda one) to test a regular 3, the salesman practically through me in a speed afterwards to compare them.
