Why are some people such idiots when I pass them?
Today I was traveling on a 2 lane highway going about 63 in a 55mph speed limit. I catch up with the car ahead of me and stay about 5 car lengths back until it is clear to pass. This car in front of me is going about 52mph. I drop a gear and pass. After passing I look in my rear view mirrow only to see the driver sarcastically clapping and the other passengers flipping me off. What the crap did I do? If someone came up behind me and passed me I would not care unless he did it around a blind corner are just barely squeezed in. I have had numerous episodes similar to this since I have owned my Civic Si. I have never had this problem before, is it my car? A few months ago I actually had someone in a beat up pick up truck try to run me off the road after I passed him in a completely legal and benign manner. Has anyone else had these experiences?

90% of the time I drive my Civic like a blue-haired drives her Buick, but I do pass people who are going considerably under the speed limit, even though I really don't speed.
I get dirty looks constantly, shaking heads, and hands in the air expressing a "wtf" attitude, usually if I have to drop it down a gear to pass. I think if you have a car that looks like the Si, and you're young, you're going to be assumed to be a tool. I think that's just something we all have to expect and live with, even if its not always true.

I think the sedans would get more respect and fewer "dirty" looks than the coupe.
For some reason I can see people looking at the coupe and just saying "ricer" or "punk" more so than a sedan.

On a sidenote, I don't go around speeding all the time, just when I pass people and they're going like 10 under b/c their phonecall is more important than anything else that is going on. |

That is exactly what happened to me a few months ago. I passed an old pickup truck who was going 10mph under the speed limit. After I passed him, I resumed my previous speed only to look in my rear view mirrow and see him coming up behind me only to pass me and then slam on his brakes in front of me. It looked to me like he was on drugs or something from the look of his face. He looked like some redneck that would have a shotgun in his truck so I was afraid he would get out and start shooting at me or something. He came to a complete stop in front of me trying to block me off several times out on this low traffic rural highway. I finally gunned it after he stopped me once, and barely got around him as he tried to ram his truck into the side of my car. I wound up having to drive about 100mph to get away from this maniac. I think the old truck just did not have the top speed to keep up. I literally feared for my life. I had never had an experience like that before. Read, there are a lot of crazy idiotic rednecks around where I live. |

It has always been a guy. I just dont understand the mentality. I dont care if I get passed. The only way I would get mad would be if someone passed me only to slow back down afterwards or if they passed in manner which endangered my life. |

Your truck story is almost exactly what happened to me as well. Passed a pickup truck on a 3 lane freeway, guy immediately pulls in behind me and tailgates. Then he shoots to the left lane beside me and tried to ram my car. I slowed down to let him get ahead. He swerved into my lane and slammed on the brakes. We were going 65 mph. What a jerk. |

Thanks for the replies everyone, at least now I know I am not just cursed. The truck episode was downright terrible, I felt like I was in some bad 70s movie. It got me thinking maybe I need to make my car faster to get away from these idiots quicker. Supercharger maybe, if were not for the warranty issues. I could get a faster car but I like my car and it is still great on gas mileage for my 42 mile drive to work |

See this I don't get...
They are going under 10 the speed limit. Of course it is expected people to pass them. Riding in my friend's RSX Type S on CRUISE CONTROL, we still get dirty looks passing ppl going under the speed limit. I think it is all about the car you drive. ------------ Another story semi-related. When driving my old beater (1994 Nissan Maxima) through a friend's suburban neighborhood, (speed limit is 25mph but I seen people go 45). I had mothers jump in front of my car telling me I was driving to fast (30mph. Seriously I am ALL about safety so I was really insulted) and I need to slow the fuk down or I might run over their kids (even though their kids are inside playing PS3 or Xbox360). When I came back one time driving (40-45mph. Rushing to pick up friend to go to work) in my uncle's Lexus LX470 I get nice friendly waves from everybody. I come to the conclusion a lot of suburban neighborhoods is just an illusion of a "close community" |
