the worst thing you can do is give gas while the clutch is in the catch area. thats the worst. at least wait till clutch all the way out.

I always give gas while I release the clutch, the shift isn't smooth without it. How am I wearing the clutch by making the shift smoother? I'm not lingering on the clutch pedal, it's a split second action. Release clutch while applying gas. At first I never gave gas and boy were the shifts jerky, then I started to as I released the clutch and that smoothed things out.

Ya it makes sense for their heads to move whenever you depress the clutch. Think about it, your accelerating, and all of a sudden you're not.

Another way to be really smooth I think like someone above mentioned, is too slowly take your foot off the accelerator (maybe in a 1-2 second span, not split second) and then engage the clutch. If you let off enough and time it right, you can kind of lessen the effect of the momentum change. I'll do this if I'm being really anal or the g/f isn't feeling good/sleepy, but most other times I just drive like normal.

I absolutely hate it when my passengers move their heads forward due to the change in momentum when shifting, so I always try and drive as smooth as possible. Best way to do so is to ease off the gas instead of letting it go abruptly in order to lessen the sudden change in momentum. Focus on this everytime you shift, and soon enough you'll find yourself not only becoming a smoother driver, but you won't be speeding as much anymore...thus less chance of getting tickets!

On top of that, I've found it pretty normal for people to ride the clutch particularly in reverse to avoid backing out at unreasonable speeds, but at such low rpms, it doesn't damage the clutch as much as you would say coasting with your foot on the clutch. The worst you can do is depress the clutch less than a couple inches... very, very bad.

And Asian Hamster, I think what we experience with that has at least a little bit to do with the DBW system, and the throttle lag we experience with it. We are allowed a window where we can slightly accelerate without pushing the limit and screwing the clutch and shifting smoother. On my old manual tranny 92 accord, you HAD to let out the clutch all the way and then gas it or it would let you know with a pretty large jerk. Eventually you can learn do both at the same time and smooth it all out.
