DIY - Schroth Racing Harness install for Sedan (Coupe should be similar)

Schroth Racing Harness (Ralleye 4) installation in a sedan (coupe should be similar) DIY:

Tools needed:

Ratchet
14 mm socket
10 mm socket
1 – 8 inch socket extension
14 mm wrench (preferably ratcheting)
2 – Plies or Vice-grips (or one of each)
Long screwdriver

All directions are from looking at the car from the front. I.e. Left is passenger side.

Step 1 – Lay out the belt like it will sit in the car:

Make sure there are no twists in the webbing and that the buckles are all lined up properly.

Step 2 – Removing base of rear seat from the car:

Note the locations of the belts / buckles / buckle clips in the seat cushion.

There is one bolt located behind the center portion of the lower rear seat cushion. You will have to pull the seat cushion forward where the upper and lower pieces come together. Use the 10 mm socket with the extension to reach this bolt and unscrew it. This is the only bolt that needs the 10 mm. All other bolts need a 14 mm.

After that bolt has been removed lift the front of the seat vertically. There are two clips that will unsnap with only moderate force. The photo below shows that the clips look like.

After you pull the seat up you can remove the entire lower cushion from the vehicle. Set it somewhere that won’t get it dirty. Below is the bottom of the seat.

Step 3 – Install right rear seatbelt bracket:

Use the 14 mm socket to loosen and remove the stock right rear seatbelt bracket. You may have to use a short socket extension to save your knuckles. The photo below shows the stock setup. I used a multi angle extension because the short extension was too long to fit under the seat back.

After removing the bracket you will notice that the bolt cannot be removed due to a bolt retainer (I don’t know the actual name) seen below.

Use a pair of pliers or a flathead screwdriver to bend the retainer up and down until it breaks and you can pull it off. This is necessary because the racing harness mounts with the bracket on top of the stock bracket.

Next bend the bracket so that it matches the bend in the stock bracket. The Schroth brackets can be bent up to 90* if necessary. We only need to bend them about 35*.

The next two photos show how I bent the bracket, your method may vary.

Finally install the right rear bracket on top of the stock mount and bolt down tight with one of the supplied lock washers. The harness bracket and seat bracket should sit right on top of each other and also sit at the same angle. The photo below shows the brackets on a bolt but not with the proper orientation.

Step 4 – Install the left rear seatbelt bracket:

Unbolt the bracket and take off the bolt retainer like the right side. Bend the left rear harness bracket to match the buckle catch for the rear driver side belt. I used this direction because the center belt is at a funny angle and the belts would not mesh neatly. Below is an image of the stock bracket.

Install the bracket in the same order as the right side. However make sure you run the harness belt toward the center of the car around the center belt or else the center belt will not sit correctly against the rear seat.

Step 5 – Install left front bracket:

Slide the seat completely back. Use the wrench to remove the seat belt. You cannot fit a socket because there is not enough clearance between the seat edge and the center console. Install the left front bracket with the stock seatbelt farthest from the seat. The order should be:

<\\\[]\\[]\\\D
^ ^
| \
Harness Stock

Step 6 – Install right front bracket:

Use the long screwdriver the push on the lower part of the bracket cover. It will unsnap along the lower edge. It is easier to keep the seat slid back to get to this cover. Once the first piece of the cover unsnaps, slide the seat all the way forward and pull the cover loose by pulling along the bottom. Once the cover loosens up you can lift it out of its tabs.

Install the racing harness under the stock belt. You will have to bend the bracket to match the stock belt as closely as possible. With a little bit of work I was able to get the stock cover back on without it pulling loose. Below is a photo of the installed front bracket with the cover:

Step 7 – Reinstall the rear seat:

Installation is the reverse of removal. Slide the seat bottom back, route all the belts and retainers, clip in the front of the seat, install bolt. The key here is to get ALL of the belts and belt retainers lined up like the factory. Also make sure that you don’t let the buckles fall below the seat. You can get them back out without removing the bottom but it is easier just to make sure when you are installing it.

Here are some photos of the installed product in my car:

The cool part is with this harness you can still use the stock seatbelts. Here is how I did it:

Hope this helps!

*This DIY is for informational purposes only. I take no responsibility for your install. Please use common sense; you are modifying a factory safety system. If you are unsure of your abilities to complete this install please do not attempt it. Once again installation using my instructions is at your sole risk.

This is the proper installation for the harness. Since it uses the stock bolt locations and still uses the stock mounts there is no degredation to the safety of teh stock system. Also, even though this harness is DOT legal I would not recommend using it on the street simply because you can't even turn around to see if anyone is next to you.

When you use those belts the stock one isn't fastened right? Wouldn't the 'fasten seat belt' alarm be going off all the time?

When you use it you can fasten the stock belt behind you. At least thats how I plan on doing it.

i read somewhere that the best angle to have the harness is at 180 degrees as it leaves the seat. This means that you nêed a roll cage that has a tube going right behind the seats. It should still work gơod how you did it though.
