DIY: Rivnut puller for install of trunk Cargo Net

I had a cargo net in my last car and severely missed it in my Si. So I bought my cargo net almost 2 years ago but never installed it due to a pesky little tool called a Rivnut tool that the kit doesn't include. Rivnuts turn an ordinary hole into a threaded hole in which you can screw the cargo net hooks into. They look like this:

I believe College Hills Honda rents them out for like $81 (of which $71 is credited back once its returned) and buying one online is ridiculously expensive as well, so I figured why not try and make my own.

I think I spent about $4 in parts on this and its easy to use. Heres what you need:
1 long hex head bolt

1 8mm hex nut (oversized)
1 6mm hex nut
2 6mm flat washers
a 10mm bolt driver (or a 10mm wrench)
a 10mm wrench (in addition to the optional 10mm wrench above)
a 13mm wrench

So heres what you got:

1. Assemble it like this:

2. Then screw the Rivnut onto the end of your Rivnut puller (sorry, no pics of it on the tool)

3. Add some hand soap in between the 6mm nut and washer to lubricate it.

4. Slide the Rivnut with the Rivnut puller attached into the hole.

5. Then start pulling the Rivnut.

6. Hold the oversized nut and hex bolt still while turning the 6mm nut clockwise.

7. Just keep turning the 6mm nut until its tight, then remove the bolt from the Rivnut and your done.

The Rivnut ends up going from this:

To this:

And you're done! Enjoy your Cargo net!

Unfortunately, I don't have any installed pics right now. But when I get home from work, I can snap a few. I love this thing already, it keeps everything from sliding around all over my trunk!

And to senfinger, I wouldn't even both woth the dealer man, this is SO easy to do, it took me maybe 30 minutes to do, only because I had to SLIGHTLY enlarge the hole the Rivnut went into. It was just a bit too small. But the actual pulling of the Rivnuts took a whole 5 minutes for both. Easy!

Worked like a charm! (Sorry for the camera phone pic lol) I did have to drill I believe a 3/8 just for the rivnut to go in the hole... other then that some touch-up paint/vacuuming and 3 minutes of tightening on each side! +1,000,000 rep for you!

I spent .62 cents on the 6 mm bolts/nuts/washers at an auto parts store. They really should have installed the hardware at the factory since most dealers always add moonroof visors, mud guards, trunk trays and other accessories to jack up the price.

Pretty much, its just another reason for them to charge you money. But with a little thinking, we can get around little things like this!

Nice! I had to rent one from CHH, wish I had known it could have been done with some basic parts!
