How To: Constant power outlet in trunk
Please bear with me, for not only is this my first DIY post, but my first post period.
I hate the fact that I have to keep the keys in my car when I want to charge my phone. So, today I ran a small power wire to the trunk, and put an outlet back there. Here's what you'll need: thin red wire, not sure how much...enough to get from the fusebox to the trunk thin black wire, about a foot, or so outlet, I highly recommend the one from Advanced Auto due to the bracket it comes with minifuse, 7.5amp spade connectors round connector, sorry can't remember what it's called self tapping screw, small enough to fit in the round connector tools, wire stripper - drill - small flat head First, you run the power wire to the trunk. You can do it how you wish. I ran along the sill, beside the back seat, up the back rest, across the top of the pass-thru, and through the sub box. I found it easiest to feed the wire through from the backseat to the door sill first. Then I ran it through the sill to the fusebox. Yes, I ran it from the fusebox to the trunk. I have an '06 EX coupe. Fuses 6 - 8 are empty. 6 and 7 have constant power. I tapped into the BOTTOM half with a 7.5amp fuse. (note: don't actually tap into the fusebox till you completely run the wire) Then, tuck the wire next to the seat, under and around the seatbelt, (fold the seatback down) and up along the back. If you pull the plastic back a bit, you can tuck the wire in there along the top of the opening. Feed it through the sub box in the deck. You'll see where I ran the wires (both pos, and neg) through the holder that holds the stiff trunk thingies (yes that's the official term). Find a place to put your ground. I went to the right of the sub box cause there was less stuff there. Scratch the paint off and put in a self tapping screw. I ran the ground wire through the sub box, into the holder thingy, and to the outlet. All that's left is to secure the outlet, and tap into the fusebox. I put mine up high so it won't be in the way of putting cargo in the trunk. I was gonna use some heavy duty velcro, but decided to ziptie in place. I'll attach pics soon. |
