Programming and Cutting Key Blank
Has anyone successfully purchased/programmed/cut a key blank without any dealer interaction? Or at the very least, minimum dealer interaction (perhaps to just cut the key?)
I noticed that College Hills (just as an example) has keys listed for my 06 EX Sedan for around $21. This is a key blank, including the transmitter. You can also get key blanks (valet key) for around $7. My dealer wants some obscene amount of money for an extra key. I have been tempted to buy the blank, but there are three problems that I see: 1. How do you get the dang thing cut? This inside-out key looks hard to duplicate (read: dealer only). 2. How do you program the immobilizer chip in the key (I have my two original keys, and a valet key). Again, I suspect this may be a plug something into the computer deal (read: dealer again). 3. How do I program the key fob portion of the key? This is actually probably the easiest. Seems like all makes/models of cars have a way to program extra key fobs. Any help would be appreciated. I did a search of the boards, but didn't run across anything as specific as this. Until today I figured that the ONLY place to get the key was from the dealer, until I saw key blanks listed on the online parts warehouses. |

you can buy blanks at college hills, or ebay, or wherever. That isn't the costly part. Getting the key programmed and cut at the dealership is where more cost comes into play. I don't know of any physical way to cut and program the key without a dealership being involved.

I just called the dealership by me. He said 47.50 for the "honda blank key and cut" and $25.00 to program it. He said he may not be able to program universal blanks - that's what he said at this dealership. I don't know if that's true, or he's just never done one there.

I didn't put the numbers earlier, but they quoted me $47.50 for the key and $35.00 to program it. It just would be nice if you could program the keys' yourself like you can on the domestic models (if you have two keys on Fords, you can program a third yourself). It would be really nice to save the $35.00 programming fee.
