HMLiberator: Make your Honda Music Link work right.
![]() Any of you remember the Honda Music Link, Honda's poor attempt at an iPod adapter / control from Honda OEM head units? Well, I finally got around to working on a project I'm calling the HMLiberator and I thought some of you might be interested in the progress. That up above there is the first HMLiberator made on a production board, strapped to and cabled to a Honda Music Link. With this sitting between the iPod and the Honda Music Link the iPod the controls on the iPod remain usable and the audio is cleanly passed through to the head unit. After some more work on the software I expect it to also allow track control from the steering wheel / head unit, pausing of the iPod when switching away from the CDC input, and a few other things. Ongoing info about it is being posted here, including everything one would need to make one themselves; board layouts, schematics, BOM, software, etc. Once I have the project complete I'll have everything posted for anyone to use. All relevant photos (currently work-in-progress images) are in this album. Hopefully some of you will find this useful. I know I am... I can't wait for this to be done. (After finishing this I'll probably begin work on a firmware upgrade for the Honda Music Link itself to make it work differently / better without an external adapter.) -Steve |

I'm currently doing the whole thing as an open-source project, which will continue even if I sell them. The cost of a single device (both monetary and skill-wise) is too high for most people to make a single piece. So, they can buy one. But for someone who wants to use the information to make something else or to learn from, all the info is out there for their use. |

c0nsumer, nice to see you back on the boards. This is definitely a sweet concept. You do realize Honda is revamping the Music Link and it should be released sometime this year. Of course, your little invention may save some people that already bought the original HML.

Also, I wonder how good/bad the new HML (or whatever it is called) will be and whether or not it'll work with older head units. |

Thanks for the interest. Once I have more info about them I'll be sure to note it here. As of right now I've been too busy with traveling, real-work projects, and other such things to keep working on the software. I hope that by the end of the month I'll have a working software binary posted and a better idea about if / when I'll be selling them.
