Installing SI wing on coupe ex DIY
Hey everybody, this is my first post and my first mod as well. Hope you find this useful. I read other DIY's about this and they were really helpful. I just wanted to supplement some of their information.
1. This is the original spoiler on my civic: ![]() 2. To remove the spoiler: open the trunk and unscrew the 2 innermost screws. Then loosen the 2 middle white fasteners by pressing on its sides with pliers. Then, remove the (2 on each side) outer clips by wedging a flat head screwdriver between the trunk and the spoiler. Be sure to use a towel or washcloth to prevent scratching the paint! This is what it looks like with the spoiler removed: ![]() 3. Remove the green clips by hand. They come right off. ![]() 4. Time to start drilling . You'll notice that on the sides of the trunk, there are 2 depressions for the spoiler. Begin by drilling small holes, then once the hole is made, use a wider bit and make it bigger. It took some courage to drill the first hole. The sheet metal is not that thick, so it will only take a few minutes. I started from the inside. ![]() 5. Use cutters and remove the excess metal sticking out. At first I thought the paint was going to crack, but it doesn't. Drill the rest of the holes. There should be 4 total. 6. I bought Honda paint at the dealership for $10. Also, I got round plastic fasteners at the Home Depot for like $1.50. I used a box to stand the fasteners and paint them. I also dabbed some paint on the drilled trunk holes so that the bare metal wouldn't rust. ![]() 7. I bought the spoiler pre-painted from ebay for $120. It is held in place by the 4 holes on the sides, and 1 middle screw that sits on the middle of the trunk. To be precise on where to drill the 5th hole, dab some paint on the middle of the spoiler where the 5th screw will attach to the trunk. Attach the spoiler to the trunk. (When I did this, the holes were a few millimeters off, I fixed it by making the holes slightly bigger). Remove the spoiler. Drill the 5th hole, and another for the wiring (6th hole). ![]() 8. Don't panic when you see all those holes (the 6 you just made and the 8 from the spoiler), it will turn out OK. 9. Place spoiler in place, and screw it in. The easiest way is to loosely screw all screws in place, then tightening them all (like changing a tire). I chose to disable the 3rd breaking light. I disconnected it and cut the connector with some wire left on it. This is in case it is needed in the future. Avoid loosing the connector by plugging it back. ![]() 10. Splice the wires coming from the car, and connect the spoiler cables. This is the finished product. ![]() As a side note: I was going to attach the painted plugs with some silicone, but it kinda makes the trunk look bad, almost like I glued coins to the trunk. I 'm leaving the holes for now, maybe place LED's and hook them up to the brake light? Anyway, hope you enjoy this mod. Last edited by 622marco; 04-27-2010 at 03:40 AM.
