Taillight clearing

Has anyone cleared their taillights before tinting them? Like the headlights but removing all of the red from the taillights. I've got chrome bulbs to replace for the color match but I think it would look better with the lenses cleared. I would imagine it's much like doing the headlights, which I haven't done yet either but is on the list, but I'm not sure. Anyone have any experience with this.

I've tried searching but I'm not finding anything on clearing the taillights, but just tinting them.

Thanks for your help!

Well I don't mind giving it a try as long as I can get them back together! I have all the chrome bulbs for it, which are in the colors they're supposed to be, red, white, etc. I also have the tint ready to go. So maybe I'll give this a try and post up a thread on it. I'll need to do a search and see if anyone has removed the rears to see how it's done.

I guess stay tuned!! LOL

u cant clear the tail lights, if you were to take the lens off the housing (which unlike the head lights which r super easy, ive heard is next to impossible) the lens itself is red.

You do know you have to buy silicone sealant, right? To re-seal them.

There's a pic of the original concept of the 8th gen Civic Si and it had cleared tails. I thought it looked cool. Its kinda hard to find.

Well I'll do a search for it. If anyone has any other details about it, that would greatly help.

I already knew about the re sealing. I'm doing the headlights as well. So I've already got all that ready to go. But I wanted to see if I could find anything on the tails before I started or tried it. If in fact it is not possible to do, then there's no sence in trying it. I'll just change the bulbs, throw on the tint and move on to the headlights. Not sure yet if I'm going to smoke those, but I do want to do the clearing.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

the headlights r easy, for a sedan just take them out and put them in the oven...there r no torx wrench screws like in the coupe
i think there was a guy on here who has messed with the tails tho but he didnt clear them he was making his own LED tails, i believe he said u cant just pull them apart like the headlights that they r plastic welded or sumthing

EDIT: the link above u can see that they had to cut the lenses off

Yeah I'm seeing that. If I could maybe get some taillights on the cheap I might try doing something, then if I f it up, I've got my stockies to put back on. We'll see what happens.

I'm assumgng, Knifedag, what you're saying is that they have to cut it to get it apart, but the question is, is the red lens inside of it removable, leaving a totally clear lens. That was my thought, then put the bulbs in like I have, the chrome one's in red color, with the tint over them. Thought maybe they'd be brighter with no lens in front of them!

Don't know!

If you look at the images in the threads I linked to , you can see the lens is red plastic, not an insert.

Yes I did notice that. So I guess I'll just do the easy way and go on to another project. Thanks for the info everyone!
