DIY: Making a Shift Knob (56k, No Way)

With this method you can make a shift knob out of any thing you want. You can also most likely use this method to make a knob you have sit lower (like the S2 knob).

If you decide to watch the video please read the text tutorial also because I said the wrong tap size.

I chose an 8ball because it's what I had lying around and I wanted to see if I liked the feel of a ball shaped shifter. It's also softer so tapping it was fairly easy.

Ok, you need a drill, an 11/32 drill bit(or 8.7mm), a 10 x 1.50 tap, a marker or some sort, and the knob.

This is what the tap looks like. You can get them from about any hardwear store.

So mark the ball.

Then drill a hole. Make the hole as deep as you want. I recommend making it over an inch so it sits as low as possible and just use the locking nut. (If you're attempting to make a shift knob you already own sit lower, drill into the hole that is already there carefully and slowly to prevent jacking the threads that are already there. KEEP THE DRILL STRAIGHT! I suggest using a vise to prevent the drill bit grinding on the inside of the already threaded hole.)

Now you want to tap the ball. You insert the tap and slowly tun until you get the tap into the ball a few millimeters and make sure it's straight so your threads don't get jacked. Then wind the tap down into the hole clockwise until it's too hard to turn. Start twisting counterclockwise until it's almost out. Twist back down and repeat, speeding up the rate of twisting each time. When the tap screws in and out verrrrry smoothly you can stop this process and it should be done.

Happy tapping!

DONT do this with a golf ball. Drilling golf balls can be VERY dangerous.

As long as the bit is the right size, it shouldn't. Try using a 11/32 bit by hand, if it doesn't fit in no problem, then try an 8.7 mm.

looks good, might have to try this.

Golf balls are like a rubber band ball on the inside (kinda) they can explode basically.

It's just hard to drill into a golf balls because of the dimples.

It was a danger when the golf balls had liquid centers with a rubber band wrapping. This put the liquid under pressure.

Now golf balls are solid, and the only danger there is in holding them while drilling.
