DIY: Engine cover

heres my rendition of my engine cover.
WARNING BLACKBERRY CAMERA IN USE! NO FLAMING ZONE! XD

DIY: Engine cover-059.jpg
Materials
Metallic Blue Spray Paint (not Pictured)
Red Spray Paint
White Primer
Blue Masking Tape
320grit Sanding Block
1000grit wet-dry paper(not pictured)
Exact o Knife (not pictured)
Flat-head screwdriver (install/removal)

Step 1
Obviously, undo the two screws holding the cover on.
Step 2
Rinse off the dirt and grime build up. If you dont the paint will not stick well or will chip at a later date.DIY: Engine cover-055.jpg
Step 3
Allow it to dry and dab off excess water.DIY: Engine cover-056.jpgDIY: Engine cover-057.jpg
Step 4
Once dry, set the cover on some kind of stand. I used an old box lying around in my room. Once you find a stand, take your materials to a well ventalated room so you do not get high from the fumes.DIY: Engine cover-058.jpg
Step 5
Start by spying a layer of primer, making sure not to put it on too heavy cause it will leave runs.DIY: Engine cover-060.jpgDIY: Engine cover-061.jpgDIY: Engine cover-062.jpg
Step 6
After allowing it to dry, sand down the surface until it feels reasonably smooth. Then spray again. Do this as many times as desired. Remember, the more time you put into this, the better the end result will be.DIY: Engine cover-063.jpgDIY: Engine cover-064.jpg

Ill add more in the next post. I ran out of attachment room :P

BOO I HAVE NO MORE ROOM! Anyway thank god for photobucket.

Step 7
Whew. For my car, i wanted to add an accent of blue to the engine bay because the lights in the dash of my ex are blue. So i taped around the HONDA, leaving just that part exposed for paint. Allow to dry.
Step 8
After 30 or so minuets, i checked to see if it had fully dried. I then removed the tape leaving a blue area around the HONDA. I admit, i didnt do the best job but it was a late saturday night.
Step 9
I then put a piece of tape over the HONDA so i could keep the the blue part from being painted over in red. This step took alot of time for the cutting around the letters. You have been for warned.
Step 10
I applied my first layer of red paint found out that i had cut too deep into the paint while i was cutting out the letters. I had also left finger prints in the paint cause it was still some what tacky. I then repeated what i had done with the primer, but not as deep. This is when i started using the wet-dry paper.
Step 11
I applied the last layer of paint and i allowed it to cure overnight. Here are the results.
Step 12
I then removed the tape that i had put on the letters, leaving behind the blue letters. I installed later on that day. but i do not have a pic of that right now cause phone died. But here is the finished product.

Whatcha guys think?

red box. What is this thing and is it paintable?
Cyran.(light blue) is it safe to powdercoat this part?

looks a tad out of place. Maybe you should clean the entire engine bay, and restore blacks to black.

(Blue box) I think gets too hot to powdercoat ad may trap in heat.
(Red box) should be spray paintable provided you maks off the connector.

no, i meant clean dirty bits.

Personally i prefer 'accents' around the engine, but each to their own, painting the engine cover is bigger work

i cant afford to take it apart that much and i don want to ruin my parents oven . so painting the top of the block will have to wait.
