Welding question...

I'm attempting to figure out what exactly is required to weld titanium and if it can be done with a mig welder.I have the seemingly unsurmountable task of fixing my J's racing exhaust and of course in the area I'm at(Killeen/Ft.Hood) there are no welders to be found that can tackle this task.I just need to know as much as possible about welding Ti and what it requires.I do plan on buying some practice pieces o practise on before doing my own exhaust and at that I feel I'll only need a few tack welds anyways.

you have to use TIG (or GTAW) to weld titanium. the weld has to be protected with argon gas in order to be viable. you cant wire weld (MIG) titanium unless you can find titanium wire and solve a lot of electrical challenges and chemical challenges involved (such as protecting the liquid metal from oxygen). TIG welding is the best direct welding way to go. in my opinion an easier, and maybe stronger if your not experienced, way to go is oxy-acetylene brazing. you can braze it with aluminum, silver, or cupro nickel braze. there are plenty of online tutorials on how to do this just use google. flux will still be important.

You can mig titanium with argon, with chrome wire.

Looks like I have some research to do...A friend of mine has a MIG welder, but I figured I'd need a TIG welder to properly do it.Looks like I might be able to save myself a grand or so.

Thats Mr.Bart to you!
The problem also is that Ti needs alot of power to be wealded just like aluminum. so a small off the shelf welder wont cut it. like i have a 150A at home and it for sure wont cut it. im not even attempting to weld aluminum here at home just because i dont have argon, i just have argo gold mix, which is CO2 and argon mixed together to make it cheaper.

Like you would think that on a welder that can penitrate 1/4" thick steel it would be able to wend some 1/8" thick aluminum but... nope cant do it. i need the argon and a better ground.

yeah...but I'm not trying to cut through anything thick, moreso I'm trying to just secure a loose resonator core in my exhaust. If it were any other exhaust I'd just say screw it and replace the core with straight through pipe but that's not really an option.

Also the Ti rods I ordered are fairly thin from what it looks like.
