'06 Si shift knob removal problem, need advice
I just received my new Skunk2 Shift knob, I've been looking forward to installing it. Problem: I haven't been able to remove the stock one. I've STF, and on the web, and looked at all the available info on the subject of removing shift knobs on an '06 Si. The procedure is simple:
"1. Make sure the emergency brake is on. Put the shifter into neutral and remove the shift knob by loosening the nut at the base of the knob. Unscrew the knob and nut and set them aside" I'm having a problem. The nut at base of knob won't loosen. Nothing. Using a wrench, adjusted to get a good solid grip, turning counter-clockwise, I've been unable to get it to budge. I've tried really hard. I'm at risk of stripping the surface of the nut if I try any harder. The black paint on the nut is already chipping off a little, revealing the metal underneath. I stopped, not wanting to do any further damage to the exterior suface of the nut. Why is the nut so stuck? Anyone else run into this when trying to install a new shift knob? |

Here's the deal. At first, turn the nut CLOCKWISE. Then turn the shift knob counter clockwise to remove. Then turn the nut counter-clockwise to remove from the shifter. It's an odd set up, but trust me, I've done it twice.

Going to try the WD-40 thing. Due for a trip to Auto Supply store. Maybe a tool more precise than a wrench might help, too.
The guy at Honda Parts, earlier today (I was in picking up wiper blades I'd ordered) seemed to think I could screw off the knob by hand. Ohter users have reported it being easy, too. It was hot inside my car when I started this, wonder if that's a factor. I don't think so. I'd tried loosening it by hand a few days ago, too, when it was cool. Hope the WD-40 works, thanks for the suggestion. I'll report back after I've tried it. |

That was the ticket. It worked. You're right. It is an odd setup. If I hadn't read your post, IVI, I don't think I'd have figured it out. It took a few more minutes of fooling around to get the knob oriented correctly, so the shift diagram on the top of the knob read right-side up. Feels GREAT to have the Skunk2 knob in place. That thing is heavy. Once installed, the weight isn't as overwhelming as it feels in the palm of your hand. Installed it feels pretty normal. I love it. The gun metal grey is darker than I imagined. Of course, now all I want to do is sit in my car and look at it. It's only my second official mod. (the first being a Garmin GPS device) next in line is a shift boot, which I ordered a few days ago, with the red stitching. Thanks again for the suggestions, glad to have the Skunk2 Racing Billet 6 Speed Knob securely installed. |

i kind of had a problem putting on my 2000 s2000 shiftknob on..but i realized all you have to do is adjust the nut to how you want it to face....but my stock shift knob came right off with a couple turns.
