I just installed my twm kit today and I have a tip for you guys on how NOT to drop the bushings. Well actually I droped them about 20 times but never lost them or had to remove the console. I knew there was no way I could get my fingers in there and not drop the bushings. I didn't like the idea of the fun tack so I came up with my own simple solution. Take some light fishing line tie it through the bushing like a ring on a necklace. put the string under the hole the bushing goes in and pull it up and through with some needle nose untill the bushing is in snug in place, then tie off or tape the loop to the shifter so it holds in place. All you do now is just put the bolts in tighten it part way down. Cut the fishing line and pull it out like dentle floss between your teeth (there is room for the fishing line and the bolt so it slides right out). I could have never even done this with the fun tack. I needed the line to pull them up into place. Hope this helps the guys who don't have any fun tack handy. This may actually be the way to go even if you have it as you will not loose the bushing. Thank you all who contributed to this guide it was very helpful!

That is a great idea, I'll have to try it next time I install a set.

Thanks,

Yes, you can retain the stock shift knob and boot with our short shifter, base bushings and cable bushings. Installing any of the three, or all three items allows you to keep the stock knob and boot.

Thanks,

Kevin

No, that is a separate issue. There is a Big thread on that right now. It's your sychros. They are toast and need to be replaced.

I am looking for the blue cap that you can find in picture 11. Does anyone have an extra or know where I can find one besides the dealer...which is charging $80 for the whole kit?

just finished installing the TWM short shifter and base bushings...easy, easy...and the result is great.
As others have said...just move the center console back. Once its loose this job is easy...its near impossible to do with the console in place.

Installed the SS, base and cable bushings this weekend. Love it. This is how the car should have shipped out of the factory. Shift effort is increased a little bit, but I barely feel the 3rd gear notch anymore. Skunk2 shift knob is on the way. Should have it by the weekend. Can't wait...that should hopefully reduce the shift effort.

I didn't notice any increase in shift effort!? Quite on the contrary the short shifter made shifts a lot easier with a positive feel. I added the Skunk2 shift knob and I didn't see that much of a difference. The stock knob is actually weighted and does a nice job.

So the kit would work great without an after market shift knob?

The short shifter has nothing to do with the shift knob. You'll be fine if you use the stock shifter.
