Painted Rims DIY
I know there are one or two other DIYs on the site about this, but I did mine this weekend and thought why not. Plus I wanted to show off my results.
![]() I went to Pep Boys b/c it's the closest autoesque shop near my house and got what i needed. I got 3 cans of primer, 3 cans of dupli-color engine enamel paint (glossy black), 2 cans of dupli-color engine enamel paint (blue), 2 cans of clear top coat, and one can of special wheel coat. I used the engine enamel paint b/c it's heat resistant and some people that I talked to said that it was a strong paint so that's why I settled on it. The other materials I used I had at my house were steel wool, and blue painter's tape. 1. Cover a work area with newspaper or plastic to protect the ground from the paint and stuff. 2. Jack up your car and put on jack stands (not a good idea to leave on jack), and take the wheels off. Put the hardware somewhere you will be able to find it later. 3. Use steel wool or sand paper to dull wheel surface and get ready for primer. 4. Tape around rim and make sure no tire is showing. I used plasic to cover every part of the wheel and put index cards around it to prevent any sort of unwanted over spray. 5. Spray 3 to 4 coats of primer waiting about 10 mins. in between coats. 6. Next grab the black or whatever color you picked and spray between 5 and 6 coats waiting 15 mins. in between coats. 7. I wanted to put a lip on mine so I used the painter's tape to make a thin border around the edge. I covered the inside of the wheel with newspaper and made sure there was no black showing that I didn't want to paint. 8. I painted another 3 coats of primer on the lip. 9. After that dried I sprayed the blue doing 4 coats. You can use whatever color you want. 10. When all those dried I took the newspaper and tape off, and sprayed 3 coats of clear top coat waiting 10 minutes between each coat. 11. I found this clear wheel coating spray that said it protected against chemicals and paint chips so I figured I would try it. I did 3 coats of that as well waiting 10 minutes in between. After that you're pretty much done. I painted the bolts blue as well b/c I thought it looked better, but after everything dries just put the wheels back on you're good to go. Message me if you have any questions. Last edited by theduke; 01-13-2009 at 03:52 PM. |
