DIY: Lower Tie Bar Braces (Rear)

This is a PARTIAL DIY on the GTSPEC Rear Lower Tie Bar Brace on a 2008 Si Sedan.

1.) Jack up the car utilizing the pinch-welds just forward of the rear tires. Do NOT jack off the tie bar braces as you will hate yourself forever. Also make sure to put some kind of block infront of the front tires AND put it in first. This should help eliminate the car wanting to roll forward.

2.) Remove the rear diffuser, this will include 3 of the Honda factory clips and 3 10mm bolts. WARNING:: I found a TON of little pebbles/road dirt had found their way up there, wear safety glasses

Here is the diffuser removed.

3.) Find the center points for the rear lower tie bar braces, they are pretty obivious but here is the image for reference.

4.) Using an impact (it sucks without one!!) loosen up the bolt until you have it completely unthreaded.

5.) After this point be ready for all hell to break loose, but here is how we figured to make it more managable. Using a block of wood as long as the lower tie bar, use a floor jack and put pressure on the lower tie bar, if you're too high or too low, the bolt will not easily pull out. After this pull out the bolt, put the brace on and push the bolt back in. Using a BFH give the bolt a couple good hits (otherwise it will not properly seat and the threads won't grab)

Don't torque the bolt down just yet, but make sure its pretty well threaded in.

Lower the jack and repeat on the other side. Sorry for the lack of pictures, we actually learned the hard way about putting the jack under the lower tie bar and it fell out, DON'T LET THIS HAPPEN!!

The rear diffuser will NOT fit back on with the tiny factory bolts, you will need something significantly longer for it to thread properly, but it will go back WITHOUT being cut or modified.

Make sure to get your alignment checked, especially if the brace moved at all.

QUestions

1) Notice any difference with this?

2) Did you put something in front of the front tires so the car didn't roll? I have to install a rear sway bar but don't want to jack up the front and back.

Thanks

Notice any difference? Yes I did - when I go into a corner with any amount of speed I can easily handle it without issues. Even with the factory suspension I noticed it helped. You will not notice it at all in a straight line, but when cornering the body rolls seems much less.

2.) Yeah I had a cinder block infront of the front tire - I'll toss that into the DIY now.

I have a general question for every one with the rear lower tie bar.
Who has actualy put the under panel back on and who has left it off?
Has the people that left it off seen a change in gas mileage or do you guys think it wont make that much of a difference?

I left it on - used some new bolts and it fits without much effort. Its actually protecting the spare tire wheel from alot of road crap. It also keeps air from getting trapped inside the bumper cover and putting unneeded wear on the supports. The thing weights less then 2lbs and it takes two 15 cent screws to reattach.

Just my two pennies I'd always say put it back on, it was there for a reason.

my wheel liner is just a piece of plastic, i take that off and next time it rains im in trouble

isnt that gas tank around there? i know it cant cover it, but whats there that might need protection from rain? is the metal underthere rust proof/resistant atleast?

actually if you took the wheel liner off it wouldn't make a difference, your engine would just get dirty. I've had my rear tie for a year now with no diffuser and everything under the car still looks fine if that helps any.
