noobie changing oil
okay to start things off i have an si. this is my first car, and ive never ever done any car stuff before. dont get me wrong, i know about cars, just never actually had the guts to handle the engines and such.
I was looking through my owners manual and i found the oil change stuff. i looked under the car, but the black and white photos dont help me find the exact place of the oil changing nut. basically, i need someone to help me (walk me through) an oil change on the si. first step to last. pics if we can. i really dont want the dealers touching my car, and defintely not speedyoilchange. any takers? i kno im asking for alot, but help would be greatly apprecaited. and maybe the detailed oil change has already been covered, and in that case, just post up a link to that thread! |

At the top of this forum is a sticky thread that called "DIY index." In there you will find a link to a thread about changing you oil.
Here is a link to the index thread, I know the oil change is in there somewhere... DIY/install index - LOOK HERE BEFORE ASKING FOR A DIY Ahhh... the oil change is for a normal civic. The procdure is the same for the Si, but the drain bolt and filter are in different locations. The drain bolt should still be at the bottom of the oil pan, but the the filter is more towrds the back of the engine by the firewall, I think it up higher too and side ways. Can someone else confirm where the oil filter is? I don't have an Si.... Good luck and hope this helkps! |

An oil change is very simple to do, and just as simple to screw up.
If I were you, I would get a friend who is knowledgeable about cars and has done many oil changes in the past to step you through it. Also, since this is an Si and it might be your 1st oil change, take it to the dealer and tell them you want to watch the oil being changed. They should let you do that. Ask the Tech that's changing it questions each step of the change. The reason I say don't do it the 1st time by yourself is this: 1. If you overtighten the oil pan bolt, you could strip the threads in the oil pan. (This is BAD) 2. You need to have a torque wrench to tighten it to spec, unless your familiar with the feel. 3. You need to know to lubricate the filter gasket before installing it. Once you've done it, it will become second nature. good luck augydog Last edited by augydog; 07-30-2006 at 12:08 PM. |

I'd wait until about 5,000 miles to do it. I believe there is a break-in additive in the original oil. You'll want to get the gasket for the oil plug too. You should change that gasket everytime you change the oil. I got 'em from the dealer for like $0.20.
