Lockout Key Blank?
Been to two honda dealerships and three locksmiths trying to get a simple, no transponder "Lockout Key" cut.
What I need is a couple of hideable "key only" (no electronics, no transponder) so that in the event that I lock the key in the car (it's possible) I can simply open the door. Can anyone point to a "no transponder" key blank I can ask a locksmith for? 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid Thanks in advance, Beverly Howard |

I think what he's saying is that even your "plain and simple key" (the valet key) can start the car, as it DOES have the immobilizer transponder etc. What he wants is just the blank to unlock the car, and not be able to start it.

At this point, _any_ alternative (non honda) spare key options for the 2008 civic would be of interest. Beverly Howard |

snopes time ;-)
snopes.com: Remote Possibility At these key difficulties and prices, I may do what I have done a few times in the past... locate the door unlock line and install a hidden pushbutton somewhere. Beverly Howard Last edited by bevhoward; 06-22-2008 at 07:54 PM. Reason: fix url, add comment |

You just need a Key Blade,
We have them at our dealership; its the metal part of the key and no handle. Basicly used to test the cutting machine. We use them for people that do exactly what youre talking about. Locked the keys in the trunk or car without the expese of a whole new key/imobilizer/and programming. Simply put, if they wont sell you one of those just have them cut a vallet key, like $15 bucks, and just tell them you dont want it programmed. |

I got my key at a lock smith. I think it cost ~$20. It's just the metal. Nothing else, no transponder thing, nothing, just the metal key.. I keep it in my wallet incase i lock my keys in my trunk (again).
Thats why i wanted it just the metal key, so it can fit in my wallet with minimal bulge. |

As mentioned, shortly after we got the car (late January) went to two local dealers (Austin/Round Rock, TX) and neither had blanks plus, both didn't seem to know what any key would cost... "somewhere between $50 and $125" (wierd) Beverly Howard |

Success... the dealer's the solution.
Success... and the dealer (Round Rock, TX Honda) now had the valet keys for reasonable ($17 _including_ programming) They, and the other dealership in the area, didn't have the 2008 keys when I started this quest.
Adding to the equation, it's almost a 100 mile round trip to the Round Rock dealer, which tends to limit simply "stopping by. I did stop at another Austin locksmith on the way there to get a key cut for my bike and asked about the honda key... $50 for a hardware key and $150 for a transponder key. During the process, being told "Bring the car and _all_ keys in to get the keys programmed" it finally dawned on exactly what the "Key Programming" process probably is... I had assumed that the "keys" were programmed to the car, but (duh!) I would now guess that each key simply has an rfid chip with a unique number and the "programming" process is to simply notify the car of the rfid of each acceptable key. I assume that the computer programming process can't do this incrementally (i.e. "Car, add this key to your current list of approved keys") and the only way to add a key is to wipe the car's existing key list and enter a complete new list by sending a code to the computer to start detecting keys, then using every key to simulate starting the car to build a new list. Thanks for everyone's help, Beverly Howard |

or you could call me or roadside assistance and we just use our lockout kit and either pop your trunk or unlock your doors from the inside. 8ths are fairly hard to get into though...but pulling the trunk latch has never failed.
