Using a carwash/water mixture instead of detailing spray with a clay bar.

I have seen posts that talk about this several times, but I can't find any tonight. I bought a large Clay Magic bar from ebay. I would prefer to use a strong mixture of Meguiar's Gold Class and water instead of the detailing spray. I've heard a mixture will lubricate better, and is of course cheaper.

Let me know what you guys think.

It would be fine nut then you'd have to wash the car again. With the detailing spray you can wipe it dry then move onto waxing right after.

or just use distilled water.

I dont know why but when i used carwash/water, my clay bar didnt last as long. It started to fall apart.

Yup. Well, actually, since you're using car wash to lubricate it, I just rinsed it off with water, did a rub-down again to dry, then got to polishing/waxing.

That's probably the only detriment to using a soap/water mix compared to quick detailer. If QD were a bit cheaper, I'd just that.

I use the Optimum no rinse wash mixed with water for my claybarring spray. Works perfectly! Works amazingly well for wet-sanding as well

I think I read somewhere that detergents break down claybar--thus the suggestion to use detail spray or distilled water.

Yeah i've been using detail spray. I just used carwash/water for my old hub caps after i got done using the clay on the car paint using the detail spray.

distilled water. If i wasnt feeling extremly tired right now I would take a pic of my detail section in my garage.

about 20 different bottles of stuff from wheel acid, to simple green for the engine. Up top of the shelf...tire shine...and 4 or 5 gallons of distilled water. I buy them for a buck a gallon on sale at wal mart

I donno if I'd use just water, I think you need some kind of lubrication from the stuff in the detailing spray or whatever.

The detailing spray just makes it sooo smooth tho. I love that stuff.

I haven't clayed my new civic yet, but did a number of times on my old GTP. I always used the soap/water with excellent results. I would think even using the spray detailer you would want to rewash the car to remove any possible contaminants that may stay behind on the paint. Maybe I am wrong.

i believe that zaino tells you to use their carwash solution as a lub i've done it a few times and it works great!
