Remove wax?
Hey, I am getting the HFP kit installed soon and was wondering:
1. Do I need to remove the Meguiars NXT paste wax that I used before having the kit installed? 2. If so, what should I use that will remove it? Clay? My thinking was to get the surface prepped perfectly for them to install the kit but then I wondered if I should leave it waxed for protection under the kit or should I remove all wax so whatever double-sided tape they have to use will stick better. Thanks guys! |

I'm pretty sure it does. That's why it was a toss up for me. Do I remove the wax to ensure the double-sided tape sticks to the body not to a layer of wax?
...or do I leave the wax so I know that if water and whatnot gets under the lip kit it will have an extra layer of protection? Any other ideas? |

Definitely remove it. The lip will be a physical barrier to the paint, so wax isn't really necessary. Personally, I wouldn't do anything. Just bring it up w/ the dealer. the HFP install instructions explicitly say to rub the area down with isopropyl alcohol.

Your gonna wanna remove that wax because the double sided tape will need to stick to the car/paint rather than the easily removable wax.

dawn original scent liquid dish soap and then "PREPSOL" or rubbing alchohol. You need to strip the hell outa the paint really well in order for the lip kit to stick to it like CRAZY!. If you prep the area first, you should have the kit on there like you superglued it. Wax will most likely prevent the 3M tape from sticking at it's best potential.

Hey everyone. Sorry I didn't update. I ended up washing the area (to get the dirt off) then claybarring the whole under section. I've been told Clay can remove wax, is this true?
Either way, they said that they prep the area using a heavy-duty degreaser. I didn't use rubbing alcohol (isopropal) cause I didn't read this thread in time. I can still probably have someone run up to the dealership and do it or call them and tell them to do it. Do you think I need to pursue it more before they put the kit on or do you think my prep along with whatever they do will be good enough to get the tape to stick? Thanks for all the input so far guys! I hope this helps someone in the future! |

it can, at least some of the courser ones... but Griot's clay will not...
at least that's wat they advertised. it's best you use rubbing alcohol or PaintPrep if you do install something in the future on your own... like emblems or small trim pieces, etc. even clearbra. im sure the dealer does use a degreaser before they apply the 3M tape. doesn't necessarily have to be rubbing alcohol. |

thanks everyone for the replies. The kit is on and it seems to be sticking well. Just wondering, and this may be a bit anal, how long do I need to wait before washing the car? Will this matter with the double-sided tape? Do I need to give it a day or so to adhere?
It's supposed to be 60-degrees today and "plentiful sunshine" so I'm assuming ~70 in the direct sun (which my car will be in all day). Am I okay to go spray it off at lunchtime (not power wash the seams, just give it a quick spray)? Thanks again! BTW I realize now how much I need a drop! HFP suspension is on the list. |
