HELP! How Do I Get This Off?!

I just washed my car and there were little black spots in certain areas. I was using a sponge and when I saw that the spots weren't coming off, I used the rough side of the sponge. I tried to rub them out, but nothing happened. I have about 8 of these marks all over.

You used the rough side of the sponge?! :O Please tell me it wasn't one of those sponges w/ a brillow pad on one side. If it is, you more than likely marred the crap out of your clearcoat. Might need a polisher to get that out. Should've used a claybar if the sponge wasn't taking it off

Oh btw, the black spots were probably tar. I get those all over my car and the only thing that will take them off for me is a claybar and several passes over it.

The black spots, like mentioned, were probably tar deposits from fresh road paving or what not. Try to always use a dedicated method to fixing a problem. If washing alone does not fix the issue, do not scrub harder. Dry the car, and use the next appropriate method. In this case, I would have tried to clay bar the tar spot, and as the next resort tried a bug and tar remover.

Anyways, you solution it to use an abrasive polish. Meguairs sells "ScratchX" which is OTC and can probably fix it or atleast make it less noticeable. If it doesn;t work, you will need to have a detailer use a machine polisher to remove it.

Good luck. If you were local I'd help you out.

Yeah, I should've mentioend that. Definitely grab some Scratch-X and try to work it out. If it doesn't, you're going to have to get a polisher or pay someone to do it. Neverrr use anything rough like that to clean the car. The paint is so incredibly delicate

I would recommend using a claybar before going to the scratch-x. If the scratch-x doesn't do it, then move to something more abrasive like polishing compound.

some stuff you can try...

RC car motor spray (this is wat i use to remove tar and smudge)
WD40
Googone

if all fails, Clay. if that fails, polish. if that fails, beer... lots of it.
you wont see it any more.

Well I think it's safe to say the brillow pad scraped off the tar lol. Now he has to worry about the scratches, which none of that stuff will fix.

I didn't the paint would be that easy to scrape off. To fix the scratches, should i use scratch-x? They're not very deep. And the clay bar wouldn't help now, right? I'm new to detailing a car this much and i don't know the proper steps to take.

Yes you should start w/ scratch-x. The scratches might need a more aggressive compound, though. First off, get a bottle of Scratch-x and an applicator. Work it in, buff it off. If you aren't satisfied w/ the results, do this again. Give it a few applications before you write it off completely.

How to remove a defect by hand with ScratchX - Car Care Forums: Meguiar's Online Here ya go bro

If you can't see it because you haven't logged in, I'll sum it up for ya.

1. Only work a small area at a time - about 6 inch by 6 inch area or smaller
2. You can apply using a combination of circular motions and straight-line motions
3. Work the product against the finish until it looks as you have almost run out of product.
4. Re-apply the product and repeat the above steps 2-3 more times

Btw, just use something like this:

It's basically a gentle foam pad. It might even come w/ the stuff, I'm not sure. It's the pad you find when you buy a bottle of wax from them.
