is it bad to clay bar your car too much?

i have an 08 TW FG2 that i bought in october brand new so the paint is okay to begin with. but recently, when i'm washing my car i notice rust colored speckles in my paint. if i use my nail i can get them out but i figured if i clay bar the car it would be more practical.

but before i get into clay barring, i was just curious if clay barring too much/too frequent would be bad for your paint? because isnt clay barring taking a light layer off your clear? thanks guys

You really shouldn't need to clay anymore than twice a year. If you are using a basic Meguiar's or Mother's claybar, there is virtually no abrasiveness in the clay, so you won't ever hurt your paint. There are clays with various degrees of cutting power, but those are sold on a professional level.

Use your fingertip as a guide to claying. If the paint surface feels rough, or does not have the smoothness you want, then clay. Remember that claying will remove all the wax that you have on the car. The only reason that I would clay more than twice a year is if your car is exposed to a lot of tree sap or bird poop or airborne contaminants that rest on the paint all the time.

Don't worry about claying too frequently. Let your fingertip be your guide.
