Wax or Glaze?

When I bought my used Si off of an audi dealership, the dealer mentioned that instead of waxing the car, for black he would use a product called 3M hand glaze. I have used this before just plain ON TOP of a wash without claybar or sealant first and it looked alright.

I was just wondering if there was a difference between prepping to "glaze" instead of waxing the car. Again the product is 3M handglaze and is applied basically the same way liquid wax is.

Should I be claybarring and sealing before I use this stuff? Does it protect the same as wax does? Or is it just an ad on after washing to keep from having to wax every wash?

I dont know much about waxing as I still have not done it yet to my Si. I know I will have to claybar and seal but if there are any other helpful hints I would like to know as I am going to attempt to claybar, seal, and wax or glaze depending on the responses next weekend.

Thanks

3M hand glaze offers no protection at all. I do like the stuff but you need to top it off with a coat of wax for protection.

Edit...There are a few different 3M glazes and some of them do offer protection.

This stuff found in stores does not however. It's more like Meguiars #7 or DC2. It can also be a pain to apply...

Use both. Glaze for the wet look, wax for the protection

I'd clay, then glaze, then seal and finally wax. I use Meguiar's #7 Show car glaze on my FBP Si, then a sealant like Natty's EXP, Wolfgang or Jet Seal. I follow up with a good wax like Natty's Blue paste wax, Mother's Reflections Top Coat, Meguiar's Gold Class carnauba or the like.

Not to add confusion but I believe when Bill says "sealant" he's talking about a synthetic wax, and then topping that of with a natural or carnauba wax.

Switch the seal and glaze around and you've got it. The sealant will be some kind of synthetic polymer that will give you lasting protection (4-6+ months) and the wax will give you a nice shine.

Edit - Bill and Rasky beat me to it, didn't even notice. Listen to either them and your car will shine
