Windshield Water Patterns?
Okay, this is going to be my weirdest question I've ever asked here, but here it goes.
On my windshield, I've noticed during car washes, and when it rains, (and water is sitting on the windshield), the water is never as heavy where your wiper's path goes, if that makes any sense. It's almost like the water leaves an outline of where the wipers movement goes, and it accumulates more where the wipers don't. This isn't a huge deal and I don't really care but I'm curious, is there anyway to eliminate this? I've been meaning to put another coat of Rain-X on the car (it's been months), but its been too cold lately. |

The only explaination I can think of is that there is probably a film of dirt present where the wiper does not contact the glass. It is similar to your paint. Just after a good cleaning (and/or waxing) you get good beading or even sheeting action. If a freshly waxed car gets dusty, the contamination causes water water to stick to it (less beading).

I claybar my windshield and windows every time I do my car, just for the hell of it, but I do not wax them, I was told it's not good for the windows, and can actually do more harm than good.
As others have mentioned, I assumed it was a layer of dirt coating the areas the wipers don't touch, or a slight wearing from where the wipers do touch, and I am aware it happens on all cars, it's just our windshields are bigger than Rosie O'Donnell's ass, so it's more noticeable. I'll do a quick claybarring once school is out for summer and tell you if it fixes it. If that doesn't work, I'll try some Rain-X, which will probably help. I find our windshield wipers are so big, that you need a LOT of water on your window for it to function without making the dreaded "rubber grinding" sound, and it drives me nuts. They don't do a good job, so rain-x will really help. If that doesn't work, Zaino makes a "scratch/impurity glass cleaner that I'll give a try. |
