How to Prep a rusty chip for touch up?

The service advisor at the dealership gave me a free bottle of touch up paint because I nag him so much about every little part of the car. I was very polite to him throughout the whole experience, but I admit I have been more anal about my car than he expects from the average customer. So he gave me some touch up paint! Observe the following chip on my hood, which has begun to rust:

How would I go about prepping the chip before I apply the touch up paint? And anyone have any tips on what to do after touching it up? I have never used touch up paint before. The little bottle has a brush that looks like nail polish. Do I clear coat it afterwards? I don't have any clear coat. Should I polish and wax it right after it dries? How long until it dries? Thanks.

I would used a rust primer. Take q-tip and dip some rust primer at that location. Then i would used the touch-up paint. Couple day later i would wax it if i don't have clear coat paint. Someone might have a better solution than me.

Wish you luck bud!!!

bump. Thanks for the advice. Can anyone else offer input? I fear the longer I keep this spot exposed, the bigger the problem will get. What do I have to do to cover the spot up?

well try to get all the rust off first. use a LIGHT sandpaper (1000-2000 grit mabey?) to knock the rust off to get to bare metal. thats all i can say that might help you out. good luck

would this be covered under the rust protection warranty? try calling America Honda corporate HQ and explain the situation. i'm sure they'll help you out.
you should go back to the dealership and throw that bottle of touch-up paint at the manager. it's a brand new car - they should do any repairs for you so it's guaranteed. they took the easy way out by giving you a $5 bottle of paint.

I have used the process outlined here on other vehicles with good results.

I don't know it wise to let them fix his car. I took my car in for a 5,000 mile oil change. They lightly scatch my front hood. Lucky by chance, I used Nu-scratch remover to clear it. Thanks god it work.

I don't trust them!!! Tried to inspect your vehicle very careful before leaving the dealership.

warranty will NOT cover that .. read the warranty book that came with your car.

it clearly says

Rust caused by road debris is not covered under the warranty.

and all they will say is that a rock did that .. and BAM .. no warranty for you

I had the same problem with my car before it was repainted... the truth is .. the factory paint is super thin and even the smallest rock is going to cause chips of paint to come off exposing bare metal

My dealership, while otherwise a good experience, warned me, "Your car has a warrenty, but on your way home (I had an 8.5 hour drive home), we can't do anything if you get a cracked windshield or paint chips."
