hey guys, i just had an interesting snow "dusting" today with about a good 2 inches on the ground, and my civic drifted a little bit and i heard the traction control beeping go off, which sounded nice and healthy to me but i have a really random question, which im almost positive i'll get ridicule for...
if you pull up the e-brake to do a purposeful drift (which is hella possible IN SNOW for those that think its just ass dragging) would it effect traction control? basically -- does the system actually do anything? or does it just beep? and would pulling up the e-brake to drift (for a second or 2 at a time) hurt it?
btw i only ask cuz i'm curious to what fun i can have in snow. i only do it in snow and will only do it in snow for the sake of my rear axle and tires. i wait till a good layer of snow is on the ground before i do so i'm not trying to drag pavement
It doesn't hurt your VSA, it'll just kick in and stop your drift. When it beeps, it's actually on, correcting your oversteer. So just turn it off before you pull the e-brake, and you'll slide flawlessly
nope the button is pretty much the only way to turn it off. but once you shut the car off it will turn its self back on. BTW since when did the traction control beep.....mine doesnt do that i just get the flashing triangle
I read somewhere that u cant set it to stay off, it starts with it on. Then you have to press the 'VSA Off' button everytime u want to do things sideways.
I've ripped my handbrake too good fun but quite scary when you come within 20 cm of a pole
I know what you mean.. I have an 06 and I guess mine don't have the button to turn it off. It just comes on and blink when your sliding flawlessly and trying to get grip. I only could do it for a good couple seconds.
Yeah, the VSA goes crazy when you pull the e-brake and slide around in the snow, but if you're not hitting the gas (I did it a few times to pull into parking spots) then I don't think it can really do much. VSA works by either killing engine power or tapping the brakes at one corner - if you pull the e-brake while coasting, it may try to hit the brake on the front outside wheel, but that's it. If you were hitting the gas while pulling the e-brake, then I'm sure it would start to kill the engine power as well.
I had no idea.... That tells you how much I've thrown mine into the twisties I guess.. There's one tight little turn on the way home everyday I thought I had pushed the limits with, but I guess not.. Only problem is, I can't push the limits there.. a slip up would mean a 30ft drop into a creek.. uh.. not fun!
The only beeping I've noticed is when I actually pull the handbrake (while moving). Guess it wants to tell me not to use the handbrake unless I'm parked. I have an 08, so I guess that might be something new on the 09?
Oh.. I thought they meant when the traction control kicks in.
Believe me.. duh.. I know little about it. I do well to think I'm actually rev-matching. hehehe
just putting down the e brake on my LX makes a beep sound while moving...i dont know if that helps this discussion or not
another question though...what does VSA system actually do??? my friend almost got into an accident the other day because he was sliding on snow but he said the VSA kicked in and just stopped his car even when the ABS wouldnt slow him down...how does this thing work to stop the car when it is out of control
VSA can cut the amount of power to the drive wheels, and also apply the brakes to each individual wheels where needed to come to a stop, i cant also control your understeer by braking the correct tires
