Why does everybody think a "fast" car wants to race them

My wife has a Mini Cooper S with John Cooper Works grilles and a $$$ John Cooper Works Carbon Fiber rear wing. Also the car has a complete Dinan engine and suspension package so that when you let off the throttle it burps and pops. Peak Horsepower 205 @ 7000 rpm Peak Torque 180 lb/ft @ 4500 rpm

Several times now people try to race us at redlights. First time the guy in a truck took off spinning tires and a cop nailed him.

Last night we passed some bikers and slowed down for the redlight. So the Dinan exhuast let off some rummbles and burps as we slowed down. These guys assume the race is on and light off from the redlight about dumping his girl off the back. We all pull into the same gas station and the fat ass on a Harley attempts to smart off to my wife about "who do you think you can race with that little car" My wife doesn't pause a second "nobody but I like to watch people make a fool out of themselves". His buddies laughed at him and the other people at the gas station also laugh.

So why do idiots assume every "fast" looking car wants to race? I'd assume the Si owners get alot of this with the wing.

i dunno everybody is lookin for some fun i guess... i noticed i get more attention with my new exhaust. I had a smart car get speedy with me thursday on the way home from work I dunno if that guy though he was something else or what but i wasnt even trying but i guess with the exhaust i have shifting at 3500 rpm must sound like trying to others lol. When ur car is obviously not stock or is a known perfermance model then ppl are going to see what u got. Personally its no big deal to me and i get something to laugh at. Sometimes i have a lil fun myself. Bikers a douche bags. I make fun of their chaps any chance i get if they are rockin any. Its no big deal man but dont tell me u got all those add-ons and such just to drive the car like an old lady...

There's no such thing as a fast car for <$500,000, only fast bikes ;-)

Yeah, Sean Newman is right. The Ferrari 430 Scuderia isn't fast. Who on earth would waste over $200,000 on a 0-60 in 3.6 sec car.

As far as what ryker said, I've wondered this myself. I've noticed it's 3 groups: any moron over compensating for something in a huge lifted truck, fat asses on Harley's and stupid highschool kids in riced out cars. Those people who actually have real sports cars don't race. For some reason having a quick car means "I think I'm actually Speed racer. Lets run!"

I know that with my SI because the thing redlines so high when I leave a light no matter how slow im going as soon as it gets past 3000 rpm .. people hear the car revving high and assume im giving it...so they then gun it.. to make sure there faster off a light.

I usually have issues with mini vans and pickup trucks.. when I come up to a red light the light turns green and they churp the tires and take off.

I was explaining to someone the other day .. a old guy in a Chrysler 300 hit a redlight with me .. took off spining his tires .. then hit another red light .. this time he did it again .. and again I just slowley left the light .. he hit a 3rd light in a row and this time I decided to accelerate a bit quicker .. when he finally caught up to me he rolled down his window and was yelling like a mad man.. he said you were driving like a granny the whole was down the street and now all of a sudden you want to drive fast .. then began saying wooooo your car is soooo fast .. does daddy know your driving his car.. ha ha .. Now im 30 yrs old .. im married and its my car .. but I dont get it. I cant explain why ppl are so ignorant .... but I can tell you one thing either they are trying to see how quick the car reallty is .. or they actually think the car is slow and want to try and prove it to you.

Yeah it's hard sometimes for me to take off from a stop light cause my Si revs and people next to me with their windows down think i'm trying to take off. I can't help that I have a legendary Si. It's an Si.

I would have said, "I'm impressed that you can actually tell the difference between your gas and your brake. Did you just escape the home and that's why you're driving like that?"

Bought the car used from a rich stock broker. It was a deal even without the Dinan parts. But yes the car is driven hard sometimes but not much. Last time I had a new GTO next to me. So I hit first gear hard. Cought him off guard and I had the jump. I knew his car was modded so I didn't even bother to try and race. Sure enough he slammed wide open for two more gears as I just cruised up to the redlight next to him.

Amen brother!, Amen!.....Although I can't say that I've ever had someone test me like that. Nobody ever gives me hell with my Si. 1 person did, some kid in a 4th gen Cobra. I took off my Si and Civic badges and he couldn't figure out if it was an Si and stopped and asked me when we were at a light. Light turns green and he takes off like a mad man!. Yeah, like I'ma actually catch up to a Cobra. I did however hit Vtec after he took off and was a ways down the road and was surprised that I was moving pretty damn quickly comming up behind him. Eh, Gas is TOO high right now to do shit like that anyways.

Heck the old fart might not have even known he was spinning tires. Those silverhairs are dangerous.

No shit. Lol. I was washing my car at a car wash yesterday. In the bay next to me was a guy who was about 5'10" and cut. He had a Ford F-150 that was so high I wondered if I could drive a car under it. Big fat tires, lots of cattle guards, huge exhaust. All I could think is either your that small where it counts or your that lousy where it counts and that's what the truck is filling in for.

The older I get, the more I appreciate men (or anyone for that matter) with a real sports cars (read Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, etc) who don't race because they have nothing to prove and the less I can tolerate morons with the need to flex their muscle size all the time.

If Honda Civic's are supposed to be POS's, then why do people test us and act like this when we're driving them?. We just own man!.
