Laying a bit of rubber in a FG2

I have an 07 FG2 (up here in canada we didn't get the VSA until the 08 model) and I've noticed over the weekend when we were doing some burnouts at a photoshoot that if I had the wheels straight I would get a fair bit of wheel hop and a shuttering like the car is trying to hookup and spin at the same time.

But if I turn the wheel a bit it would open up and allow the spin... I'm assuming this has to do with the helical locking differential but I'm not 100%

Anybody have any suggestions/comments aside for the 'ur an idiot for smoking your tires!'. I could go to my mom for those

Interesting observation, the wheel hop and shutter is the nature of our cars FF layout. It maybe possible that the LSD is providing all the torque to one wheel forcing complete loss of traction...

For instance, if a particular Torsen differential is designed with a 5:1 bias ratio, it is capable of applying up to five times more torque to the wheel that has good traction.

However, if one set of wheels loses traction completely, the Torsen differential will be unable to supply any torque to the other set of wheels. The bias ratio determines how much torque can be transferred, and five times zero is zero.

Isn't there a fix for the wheel hop? An engine mount stiffner.

Stiffer mounts help out a lot. The less the engine and trans can wobble around the better. My brother had bad wheel hop in his SE-R till he got motor mount inserts, then it was pretty much gone after that.

It's called castor. If you'll notice, as you turn the front wheels of a car (any car) away from center they are no longer parallel to the pavement. This is due to the fact that the kingpins are laid back (top towards the rear of the car). As you turn the steering wheel the contact patches of the tires are reduced as the inside edge of the tire is forced into the pavement and the outside edge is unloaded. This is to load the inside front wheel and pick up the outside front, which in turn unloads the inside rear wheel--which is required to allow a four-wheeled vehicle to turn in anything more than a cursory manner.

I would imagine if you google the term 'castor' you can find all kinds of information illustrating the principle.

Thanks guys... makes a bit of sense... I guess for launching out on the strip the upgraded engine mounts will definetly help reduce the bouncing.

hmm... I guess I was wrong on that then too... I don't know if I would even want the VSA really... I can't think of a time that it would have actually engaged in the last 9 months of owning the vehicle.

Thats what I'm suprised with on this car, stability and grip is amazing even for a FWD car

Heh, I noticed the same thing as well.

I was at my local race track making a left turn (wheels slightly turned) and waiting for other race car drivers to pass, once they did I revved up to 4000 and let her loose. She peeled out and darted away.

A few days later, I was with my race car co-pilot after dropping off my friend at racing school, and he asked me "Have you launched this thing before?"

Silly question to ask a race car driver on a closed circuit I said to myself. So this time, I did the same thing, only it was on a straight away with the wheels straight. It did nothing but wheel hop so I had to ease off the gas. :\
