I was reading the gas mileage thread and it seems like people pay for premium in some places that is only 91 octane. In North Carolina, 93 is considered premium 91 is mid. Can i use 91 safely? it would save a few bucks and iit doesnt seem like it hurts any of you

91 octane is considered by all automakers to be premium fuel nowadays. If a car calls for premium it's designed for 91. I'm not sure why we still have 93 on the east coast. |

Actually, it does work that way. I have a friend whose father owned a Sunoco station a very long time ago. Sunoco stations used to have many different octanes available from the same pump simply by rotating a selector on the side of the pump. All it did was change a combining valve that pulled different ratios of the highest octane with the lowest.
I've have made a habit of putting 93 octane in when the tank is close to empty. I top it with 89 when I need less than half a tank, and I know the last full fill from empty was done with 93. I have never experienced knocking, and my milage is not affected negatively. I have been driving Hondas probably since before most of you were even born. My first was a '75 Civic with a CVCC engine (3 valves per cylinder to reduce pollution). Blending is perfectly fine. Yup, I saved all of 60 cents on my last fill from one half of a tank, but there is nothing wrong with doing it. ![]() Last edited by bilzfan; 05-15-2008 at 11:26 AM. |

btw mid (plus) is usually considered to be 89 so its kinda off a bit for use as a premium substitute.

Why do some gas stations sell only 93 and not 91? Is it an issue of where you live or what gas station you use? If I know a particular gas station sells 91 and it's not out of the way I would use it, but in Indiana I have yet to come across a station selling 91 where I live.
