High Gas prices = driving below 3k RPMS

Hello Fellow 8th Gen Si owners

Since premium gas has gone over $4.10/gal here in San Diego, Ive started driving less and less enthusiastic. I work about 10 miles from home and commute to and from twice a day (I go home for lunch too). I've found that the K20z3 in our Si can still happily operate and provide decent power even under 3k rpms. Im really light on the accelerator and shift quickly. I can still easily merge on the freeways, enough power to pass on the streets and even use 3rd when rolling through stop signs...shhh. I can now make both round trips to work and back on just over 1 bar on the gas guage. Now, im getting way over 300mi a tank which is amazing for me! When I didnt care about gas, I was getting around 240-260mi a tank. Now on the weekends, its really hard for me to not drive more aggresively so I havent gone through a whole tank yet while only driving below 3k but maybe one day i can resist long enough.

When I first got my si, I swear I never shifted below 5k. I guess I was so used to pushing her hard, that I figured you always had to. Of course the engine is much more fun and lively up there you dont have to always push her hard.

Yea, i have to constantly remind myself to shift early. As my bars disappear though and im down to 5-6 it gets alot easier to drive mellow. lol

Yeah, some friends of mine find it odd that I'm in such high gears for a 2-litre engine. But, hey, close ratio + need to save money for gas = 46mph @ 2000k @ 6th gear for street driving.

when im in 6th and going really slow at 1.5k and give it some gas it makes some weird sound like if the engine is drowning!

6th gear @ 40mph FTW!

That's just bogging the engine...I just try to stay at 2k if I know I've got long straights with no traffic in front. Other than that, I'm likely to be in 5th instead.

If you look in the owner's manual, there's a table on the ideal shift points.

Found on page 192 of the owner's manual

Shift Up Normal Acceleration
1st to 2nd 17 mph
2nd to 3rd 29 mph
3rd to 4th 37 mph
4th to 5th 43 mph
5th to 6th 49 mph

Notice if you actually do so, you never go above 2K rpm.

at 4.22/gallon, it's a really painful to see the dots go one at a time. So under 3k it is.

um... no.. in 1st going 17 is more like 4k... same with 29 in 2nd..

now if you shift the whole chart one space... then its a differnt story... still not under 2k.. but alot lower...

yeah. your shifting from roughly 3.5-4k untill you get to 5th and 6th.

in our cars you actually dont want to be in too low of an RPM when accelerating; you should only drop it to like 2k if your going to cruise or accelerate very gently.

yup too low on the rpms can actually cause stress on the motor
