Which of these synthetic engine oils do you love?

So my first oil change is about to come up (20% on the indicator), and im mulling the decision to use synthetic instead of the fossil crap used by honda. Back when I had my DC5, i exclusively used Amsoil 5w-30, and loved it. Ran smoother then any of the others I have experience with, but now that I have the Si, im wondering if there is a better choice. Ive heard that royal purple is the king of them all, but maybe Ill save that stuff for a car that justifies its sky high price, unless of course some of you can convince me otherwise. Whats your experiences with some of the FULL synthetics out there, and which one is truly the best?

Amsoil
Mobil 1
Castrol
Royal Purple
any others?

Steve

Wal-Mart Synthetic Supra-Tech

Actually, I've been using Penzoil full synthetic. It's $2.50 a quart cheaper than Mobil 1.

There's also Eneos and Motul oil.

Have used Mobil 1 or Penzoil full syn with great results for many years. Whatever is on sale at WM goes in.

Mobil 1, easily available and I don't feel like changing my oil every month and a half. I don't feel like I'm doing any harm changing it when the oil has 6k on it.

I checked mobile 1 website regarding oil change intervals.

They basically told us to follow the owner's manual.

I know synthetics last a long time, but find it weird how mobile never recommends much, other than extented performance products.

I think that's asking for too much, find difference.

May be it is the inside of the car that feels good ?

I dont know but i think my car felt better with mobil 1. Now the engine seems too loud for some reason and not loud in a good way. I probably need to add more oil VTEC'ing alot probably wastes some of it.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance (True GroupIV PAO)

There is debate about 'regular' Mobil 1 (the non-Extended Performance version) being a true full-synthetic oil. Enough so that the folks at BITOG are sceptical about its status as such. It is, however, still considered to be a top-grade synthetic.

Same with Castrol syntec right ?

But I highly doubt mobile 1 would compromise.Way too many supercars use that.

Information related to the above. Castrol Syntec is considered to be a GroupIII synthetic:

Group III is your typical “synthetic oil.” However, it is actually a refined product of Group II. That is, it has been filtered and treated to be a superb quality of oil. However it is still subject to the shearing or molecular instability of its ancestor group II oil. Don’t expect this oil to run 10,000 or even 15,000 miles. Some do last this long, because of additives, but once they wear out the oil basically falls apart. It is not a true synthetic. Its is often referred to as “hydrocracked.”
Most oils that claim to be synthetic are not. This includes almost every synthetic, Casrtol Syn-Tec, Pennzoil Platinum, Wal-Mart synthetic, and the list goes on. Why is this allowed when it is not synthetic? Mobile 1 discovered in the early ‘90s that Costrol’s full Syn-Tec oil was actually Group III, or a filtered Group II. Mobile 1 sued Castrol saying that it was not what it claimed to be. Castrol defended by saying that the oil was not Group II because it had been altered to a point to where it was reasonably the same as Mobile 1. After Castrol won, most oil companies switched over to the cheaper Group III synthetic and most of the consumers never did and never will know it. Recently there has been debate about whether or not Mobile 1 is still fully synthetic, such debate is speculative and nothing has been confirmed. Mobile 1 Extended Performance is still fully synthetic for sure.

Group IV oil is manufactured from non-petroleum ingredients in a lab. It is not naturally occurring in any way. Often referred to as PAO oil or Poly-Alpha-Olefin. These are true synthetics; this is where it is at! However, how much better they are than group III is debatable, but group IIIs are fakes.

Group IV, or real synthetic oils, have smaller molecules and are all the same size and usually smaller. Being smaller offers the advantages of not being to large to move through tolerances and thus avoids being sheared or broken into smaller pieces. Additionally, it allows the molecules to move around and over each other more easily, which can contribute to better viscosity and lubrication.

Group IV synthetics include Royal Purple, Mobile 1 Extended Performance, and Amsoil (not Xl-7500), their are others but these are the most popular.

Group V oils are rare, and not usually used for automotive base oil. The only example I know of is Redline oil, which is made from polyester and ester, better known as plastic clothing. As scary as that sounds it is probably the highest quality oil you could by, but that doesn’t mean the best oil. Usually used as an additive when making lower group oils.

Synthetic Blends
This is petroleum oil mixed with synthetic oil. Basically it helps the oil maintain its viscosity at extreme temperatures. Plus it makes for good marketing and profit.

Just a note for the Mods: This thread might be better placed in "The Garage", since it is not really Si-specific.

Group 3 is confusing to get. They claim to be full synthetic, yet there seems to be a problem.

That's why I'll just pay the extra $5 per 5QT bottle at WM to get the Extended Performance version.

That said, until recently I ran 'regular' M1 in my cars and would still swear by it. I still run regular M1 in my wife's Pilot, but run EP in her EoS R32 and my IS350.

I'd like to try the new 0W30 Mobil and see if that really gives any improvment in MPG, however.
