How to get the best price for an Si.

I am at a cross roads. I have officially read more pages in 8thcivic Si forums than in my three years in college or close enough to it. i just test drove it and it just put a smile on my face. I have a 2005 civic DX (the ultimate in speed and comfort!) that has been keept in great shape. It even has a pioneer premier deck and a Bel rx65 radar detector that I am willing to part with. I only have 25,000 miles on it too. I live in reno, NV. We have three honda dearlerships around our area. Along with the trade in, I can also put down another $5k.
What is the best price I can expect and what is the best way to go about getting that price.
I would also perfer this thread to turn in to a thread on the best ways to get a deal from the dealership and potentially your buying experience. There are probably some buyers here that might be interested in this. Thanks for your input everyone.

1. Know what your trade in is worth.
2. Haggle your trade in and sale price of new car separately.
3. Know what your credit looks like before going to the dealership.
4. Secure financing elsewhere local bank/credit union before going to the dealership.(Honda would love for you to finance with them instead of elsewhere and will give you a better rate to get you to finance thru them)
5. Know the Invoice price of new car.
6. Don't accept their 1st offer or even their 10th offer.
7. Use Auto loan calculator at Edmunds to see where you will be with your payments/interest/taxes/down payment/trade in.
8. Be prepared to walk at the drop of a hat.

Those are the things i look into before buying. And making the dealerships fight for your business was something i ever did in all my car purchases. Go in prepared and you should be ok at any dealership that wants your business.

Oh and number 9. If you can pay your sales taxes separately when you register the car or transfer the tag do it then instead of rolling the sales tax into your loan. Why pay interest on sales tax if you have the means to pay it separately, interest free.

I used lendingtree.com to get financing. And this is completely true, Honda did offer me a better rate. I had a friend that used to work at a Honda dealership, so I was calling him and asking him what a good price was. He told me that the sticker price on the car DOESN'T include all the extras they add to it before putting it out on the lot. The sticker price is usually the base price. On my Si they added the pinstripe, & mudflaps, and some other things. I told them that I didn't request any of these things to be added and I shouldn't have to pay for them. I also had a NBP Si Sedan on hold at another dealership & decided to stop at this one to see what they would do for me. Always turn down the initial offer. What they asked was ridiculous, which is when I brought up the fact that they add so many extras to the cars before putting them on the lots to jack up the price. He then asked me what I thought was a fair price for a NBP Si Sedan. I told him I would pay $$ out the door, and that I have a check I can write for that exact amount. I got a better deal on my Si than a guy that worked there!
Another thing is to never act like you just have to have this car, and always be ready to leave at any time you feel you're getting the run around. Good luck on your new purchase!!

Take your car to Carmax and get it appraised. You don't have to trade it in and the appraisal is good for a certain number of miles. Personally, I would take the trade completely out of the picture if possible because, that only leaves the price of the car to haggle.

I am not in a hurry to buy the car, so I have time to ask around. But I will definitely consider taking it to carmax. I have emailed one local dealership and they said they could work with to get the OTD to aroudn $21.5K. But I get the felling I they might add stuff to make it $22k. They also wanted me to show a quote from another dealership around our area that would even do $21.5K OTD. I asked another dealership if they could do $21k OTD and they wouldn't even consider it. If anyone here from reno or las vegas or close by in california that could give me dealerships that would give a good quote, then that would be very helpful. Otherwise I get the feeling the dealership will try to screw me.

doesn't matter who the salesman is, the finance manager has the say in what the numbers are.

Salesman brings you in, finance manager works the numbers.

Find someone that is moving; use that as a keyword in any FS search.

I was in a similar situation when I bought my Si about 2 weeks ago. I did all of the legwork and haggling online and over the phone. See, I also have 3 Honda dealers near me. I just contacted them all and asked what price they could do for me. I contacted each back and played them off of each other. I did all of this in the matter of 2 days.

In the end I walked out with a new 08 Si in Fiji Blue Pearl with navigation. 17" stock wheels with the Michelins (no complaints so far).

My price was $22,500 out the door.
Sticker price for the car was $27,000.
Invoice was $21 something.

I feel like I got a good deal.

Call your bank or credit union they will offer some sort of fleet buying service. These services are great you get a good deal and and you don't have to mess with sales people.

I've bought my last 2 cars that way. Called the bank on the phone tell them what I wanted then they called me back with a price. Then go to the bank or dealer (your choice) to pick up the car. Takes about 10-15 minutes to sign all the paperwork and thats it. Stress free and cheap.

Me? I bought mine from Landmark Honda in Alexandria.

If you want the name of the guy I bought from give me a PM. He was pretty cool and apparently he sells the most cars at that dealer so I'm assuming that gives him a little leverage to lower the price.
